A Lesson from Solomon

June 27, 2005

Thanks again to all you younger ministers who joined us on the 19th. Great time together, and I am so grateful to you for participating. The convention was well attended and the sessions were uplifting. I thought the music was outstanding. Those of you who remained for the convention experienced that first hand. A good blend of some traditional and some contemporary music. The congregational singing was very good. God blessed me greatly through it.

As we concluded on a high note on Wednesday evening my heart was drawn to 1 Kings 8:10-11 which describes the dedication of Solomon's temple: "When the priests came out of the holy place, the cloud filled the Lord's temple, and because of the cloud, the priests were not able to continue ministering, for the glory of the Lord filled the Temple."

Solomon gave a moving testimony of the greatness of God and the commitment of the people to serve Him. However, just three chapters later we find the testimony of Solomon's unfaithfulness to God (chap. 11). I want to momentarily reflect on this past week with this in mind. We had a high moment of conclusion and celebration. Now we must get on with the work the Lord has placed before us. What a tragedy if, after all the high moments, we prove to be unfaithful to God!

I have confidence in the future because I see God moving in your lives. I am praying for you and trusting the Lord to lead you to the greatest day of ministry ever. And I ask you to pray for me and for the leaders of the SBC that we will finish well in the race He has placed before us.

Thanks again for the many, many emails, letters, phone calls and personal encounters I have had with so many of you. What a day for all of us to be serving our Lord!

Hey Jimmy,
The new blog looks great and I too hope that we move forward faithfully and fruitfully in what God is doing among us.

I know I'm looking forward to joining the SBC as we work together to stop teen smoking. This is such a huge problem and really needs all of our attention. Genocide in Darfur or Rwanda are insignificant to the lives lost to smoking. Or, AIDS in Africa, I mean really this is way more serious. Poverty, man it is a joke compared to teen smoking. I am glad we are taking a stand.

We really shouldn't have lifted the Boycott on Disney either it was just starting to work.

I know this won't make it on to the blog, but really Dr. Draper there is absoluetely no future for the SBC as long as our focus is on irrelevant issues. Teen smoking? Why not pass a resolution against obesity? Or speeding? What a joke.

It is really disappointing to see that my comment was not posted. Why allow comments if you are only going to approve those that pat you on the back and tow the party line? It is sad really.

Feel free to come to my blog and post whatever critique of me you like, as long as you are not using profanity it will be posted.
