ECPA Digital Publishing Conference

Just returned from the ECPA Digital Publishing Conference in Bloomingdale, Illinois.

The sessions focused mainly on the growing importance of going to where your customers are, and most customers are now online. Heard lots of good tips on various e-marketing techniques. I have to admit that much of what I heard was more of a confirmation of things we are already doing or experimenting with at B&H.

Jeff Steele, Amazon.com's Director of Digital Media spoke and informed us about the various ways to make our books more "discoverable" on the Amazon site. One thing he speculated on was the re-emergence of e-books. Now opinions vary on this topic, but many will tell you that e-books are yet to succeed in the marketplace. In fact Steele said that of over 2 million books on Amazon's site, less than 150,000 are available in e-book form. There are many reasons for this, mainly that there has yet to be a decent e-book reader software or hardware available. But Sony has recently released a new e-book reader and its gotten Amazon's attention, so Steele is encouraging publishers to offer titles in e-book format on Amazon. E-books is something B&H will consider doing. Whether anyone will buy the new e-book readers is a different story.
