Baptist Press Analyzed

On of the blogs in my Bloglines Reader is GetReligion.org. The site analyses secular media coverage of religious issues and they are often quite insightful.

They are not afraid to slap down the media when they miss the point as they did in, "The Miami Herald vs. Kennedy, again."

The recently looked at the Baptist Press web story on Fred Thompson. As you may have read, James Dobson has said that Fred is not a Chiristian or at least not vocal about his faith, but he has some popularity among social conservatives. Richard Land, who I mentioned earlier, has some good things to say about Thompson as well.

I stayed up to watch Thompson's announcement on Leno (have I told you that Central Time is a gift from God). As I watched, I wondered if it was a bit awkward for him, appealing to social conservatives, right after spoofs of the MTV Music Awards.

Anyway, GetReligion wrote:

However, I think anyone who is interested in how the crowded field of GOP presidential hopefuls will sort out has to be interested in how the Southern Baptist Convention’s elites view the various candidates. This is especially true in a year in which social conservatives have not been thrilled, shall we say, by the options they have seen so far. You can cut the doubt with a knife.

I must confess I have not looked much into the candidates this year, but plan to as we get closer to the primaries.

And, I must point out the irony that the site, which looks for accuracy in religious reporting, actually has a picture of my workplace, LifeWay, and not the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee building which is actually next door. Unless, of course, he thinks that we are the elites... but, we just sell bibles (among other things). Easy mistake, but also a bit ironic.
