A Dichotomous Week (Update: Calvinism Research and Other Presentations at the End)

Monday November 26, 2007   ~   15 Comments

It just struck me...

Today, I present on Calvinism and then stay two days to hear lots of talks on Calvinism related issues. This is an important event for my denomination.

On Thursday, I will be in Arizona speaking at the Assemblies of God chuch planting summit. Their summit may be the most significant denominationally focused church planting conferences in a long time. It is a quite a gathering. (My Assemblies of God friends will rebuke me for calling them a denomination... so please forgive me.)

That is quite a dichotomy. Wonder which one will be more exciting? Grin.

Note to self:
Don't mix up the presentations...

------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 1:
Here is the presentation I just gave at the Calvinism Confab at Ridgecrest. Later on, we will post the full report at www.lifewayresearch.com.

Update 2:
Here is the rough draft of Dr. Dockery's presentation on the history of Calvinism. It is a draft, but I have his permission to post it.

Update 3:
I have Tom Nettles' presentation, but he gave it to me on a floppy drive. I asked him if he wrote it while listening to his 8-track. Grin. Unfortunately, my 386 running Windows 3.1 is at home, so if anyone has a floppy drive here at Ridgecrest, please let me know by leaving a comment.

Update 4:
Timmy Brister has updated his Calvinism timeline that I mentioned earlier today. You can now download the new version here.

Ed, What about your SBC friends that don't like being called a denomination? :)

Great post Ed...

love the ending!!

BTW I just have to tell you that I grew up Baptist and my first staff position was in a Baptist church and I really think God is doing some great things in the denom... moving in a big way. I have quote from you at the convention in my tagline on my e-mail.... thanks for your heart!

Trip,

I would say do both, "De-Nile is not just a river in Egypt."

Grin.

Larry, thanks... what's the quote? Hopefully not my confession that I come to the Southern Baptist Convention because it makes me feel young and thin!

Ed, Thanks for the report. I can't wait to hear it when it's posted. Can you give us a quick update on the atmosphere up there today? Is it charged? Congenial? Any war paint on faces yet?

Big Grin.

Trip

A fight just broke out over semi-pelagianism.

Nah... just kidding.

It is a lovefest... good people talking about theology and being honest.

The young and thin thing is great. It's going to be a cliche by the end of 2008 -- everyone will be sayin' it.

Those AG guys (at least the ones I've met) are more Calvinistic than even they realize.

Regardless, I have a high degree of respect for the Assemblies, particularly when I think of the large percentage of these guys who "get it" when it comes to missiology.

Have a ball . . .just don't move more than one foot at a time, put more than one hand in the air, or suddenly speak in a language you did not previously know. :)

Joel, you are right... they are really good people.

So now Don Miller gets mixed in with Joel and Oprah? Isn't that a stretch?

Ed Stetzer

Cliff,

I am not sure I get that.

The past speaker lumped Miller with Oprah and Osteen, and I felt it was a little undeserved (Building Bridges)

Oh, I get that.

Nelson is the man and I would recommend all to either listen or read the transcript he gave on Calvinism.

Hi Ed-
The quote was "Paul in Romans 9 would have been willing to give up his own salvation so that others might be saved, yet many of you aren't willing to give up your Sunday morning traditions so that others might be saved."

Amazing, amazing thought.

Next time you are in Dallas let me know and I will buy you a cup of Starbucks as thanks for that quote!!
Blessings!
