The Girl Scouts of the USA/Girl Scout Research Institute recently released some new statistics on girls and body image. Among the findings:
- Nine out of 10 girls say the fashion industry and media place a lot of pressure on teen girls to be thin.
- Three in four girls say fashion is really important to them.
- Sixty five percent of girls think that the body image respresented by the fashion industry is too skinny.
- Sixty percent say they compare their bodies to fashion models.
- Seventy five percent of girls surveyed said they'd be more likely to buy clothes they see on "real-size" models than on super-skinny ones."
- Forty-one percent say they prefer to see the latest fashions on skinny models.
Did you catch all of the contradictions? Girls are confused. Very confused. They don't know what to believe, who to believe, what to strive for, what to hope to become. They know there's something wrong with the image that culture has placed in front of them, but they don't know what to believe to the contrary. Aren't models popular? Successful? Wealthy?
That's where we as girls' ministry leaders can come alongside girls and voice a new perspective, a different way of approaching body and image and self-esteem.
Use the statistics above (and the rest that I didn't quote from the study) to begin a running dialogue (one-time discussions won't begin to speak into their lives) about how they see themselves and those around them. Here are a few questions to get the dialogue started:
1. Read the first two statistics about the fashion industry. Then ask: How important is fashion to you, on a scale of one to ten? Do you agree with these girls that say the fashion industry and media puts pressure on you? How do you feel the pressure most? Which fashion designer or brand creates the most pressure?
2. Ask girls: What size do you think a "real-size" model is? What is "super-skinny"? Who determines what is "real-size" and "skinny"?
3. Do you think that Christians should have the same perspective on fashion and body image as their non-Christian friends? Why or why not? How does God's Word speak into this issue?
