klista2BWSmall.jpgA couple of weeks ago, I told you about the Kids Beta Club we have at LifeWay Kids for new children's ministers. I wanted to enlighten you a little more on the subject.

First of all, what's with the name? Funny title for a kids ministers group, huh? The term "Beta" is a term used in mountain climbing. It's actually the information an experienced climber provides for a newbie to help his climb go more easily. That's what we do...we share from our own experiences in kids ministry to encourage those who are new and maybe struggling in their climb.

As I was preparing to write this blog, we got a note from one of our Beta club alums. It was totally unsolicited, I promise! I wanted to share it with you because I think she can tell you so much better than I just how helpful it was to her ministry.

The Beta conference was invaluable to me!  When I returned I went to work immediately, implementing many of the concepts and ideas you all presented.  Not only did I revise our existing mission statement but I also appointed Directors in each main area of our ministry.  This has proven to be one of the most valuable steps I have taken as a new children's minister.  Empowering others to be a part of the mission creates momentum and energy that I never anticipated!

Not only are things running more smoothly but they are running with less stress and fewer hours on my part.  It frees up the time I need to do the "work of the church" and less "church work."  My passion is to reach each child individually and teach them about our Lord Jesus Christ and how He desires a close personal relationship with them.  If we are too busy trying to do everything ourselves we miss out on why we have been called into ministry!

The Lifeway crew has been so helpful since the Beta conference; always available by phone, email or Facebook!  Please let your new Beta class know that what they are learning will help their ministries reach their fullest potential if they put it into action!

I will be praying for all of you!  Enjoy and know that I am looking forward to a Beta reunion!!! :)

In Christ,
Kimberly Braine-Tillem
Beta class 11/2011

If you are relatively new to kids ministry (three years or less) we would love to come alongside and help you in your climb. Please comment below and let me know if you'd be interested in joining the Kids Beta Club and I'll send you an invitation to our next event. By the way, just a reminder in case you didn't see the previous blog, the Kids Beta Club is FREE! In fact, you just need to get yourself to Nashville - after that, we'll pay for your hotel room and food while you're here!  We'd love to have you! Let me hear from you.

I look forward to our climb!

We know:

  • Your days are jam packed full of dealing with day-to-day issues in your kids ministry;
  • You're providing support for every other ministry in your church;
  • You're ministering to church families 24/7;
  • You're dealing with your own family issues - whether it's kids, aging parents, grandparents, siblings, nephews, nieces, dogs, cats, turtles...;
  • Your spare time (what spare time?) may be spent studying for your bachelor's, masters, or even doctorate degree.

Let's face it! You're busy! You don't want or need to take the time to read a blog that's not encouraging, informative, or thought-provoking.

That's why we want to make sure that the time you spend reading this blog is time well spent. You might just need a laugh; to find out you're not alone; to glean information from others who've walked those miles before you.  We want to know what you need.

Help us help you.  Leave a note below to tell us what issues are hotspots for you -- things you'd really like to know. We want to do all we can to make your ministry better and your life easier.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Sunday, September 11 was a day that many people in America were thinking about the tragic events of the terrorists attacks ten years ago. For the LifeWay Kids family, however, we were also mourning the loss of a beloved writer and friend.

jill2.jpg

Jill Goldner wrote for LifeWay Kids for many, many years. You probably recognize her name. Jill wrote for the following publications:

That's not all, Jill was also an active writer for other publishers like the Women's Missionary Union. Jill loved missions and she loved sharing the love of Christ.

In my own family, Jill will be sorely missed. Jill and my wife Abbey wrote together for several LifeWay publications. Abbey grew to love Jill as a mentor writer and as a friend. When Jill learned of our impending adoption, Jill an adoptive mother herself, sent us a huge package of gifts and told us it was full of things that we could do while we wait for our baby to come home.

Jill loved her family. Most who knew her could tell you her husband's name and children's names because she talked about them so much. They are Steve, Ryan, and Carolyn by the way.

Jill also loved to laugh. She made laughter a priority. One time at a writers conference, Jill and several other writers were walking down a flight of steps. During the walk down, Jill decided (unwillingly) that it would be more fun to fall. Jill tumbled down the steps, laughing and protecting her beloved glass of tea the entire way. Jill was shaken, but she didn't lose a drop of tea.

More than anything else I can say about Jill was that she loved her Lord and she wanted kids to know him as well. Look at her portfolio of writing and you will find lessons on strength, courage, faith, obedience, and so forth. Jill believed in the lifechanging power of God's word and she passed that on to kids through her writing. I imagine, on Sunday while we mourned her loss, Jill was welcomed into heaven by people who had been touched by her writing, her life, and her smile.

And then she came face to face with her Savior, the One whom she'd served so long. He looked at Jill, spread out His arms, and said "Well done, Jill, well done. You were faithful in all I gave you. Look around, this is your reward."

LifeWay Kids will miss Jill, we will pray for her family, will thank God for her ministry and service, but most of all we will rejoice that Jill is experience a fullness and healing in Christ that only He can bring.

The details of LifeWay’s Kids Ministry Conference are being planned now, and we want you to come and Dream Big with us! What a better place to Dream Big than Nashville, TN! Many move to Nashville each year to seek out big dreams in a music career. We want you to come along with big dreams for your Kid’s Ministry. We have fantastic leaders in Kids Ministry who are going to help us dream while providing us with practical tools to make these dreams reality in ministry. Speakers like Ed Stetzer, Jon Acuff, Tim Elmore, Angie Smith, and Pete Wilson will be here. We’ll be inspired by many others, including the Duggar family! We will also have the opportunity to worship together with musicians like Dove Award® nominee Dave Hunt.

There may also be some surprises while you’re here! So don’t miss out--come along, and Dream Big.

Tony Kummer--Children’s Minister, husband and father of five, and avid blogger--will be joining us at the conference and will be blogging away. Don’t wait until October to hear what he has to say—keep a lookout on his blog here. He’ll actually be giving away free spots to LifeWay’s Kids Ministry Conference! See what Tony has to say about LifeWay’s Kids Ministry Conference…
