I love Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that goes through Manhattan, New York. As a child, my brother and I would wake up in the morning and watch the parade while mom was cooking in the kitchen. Still to this day, I wake up on Thanksgiving Day remembering those precious times. And don’t forget about watching the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys! After the parade, we (dad, brother and I) would watch football while mom was still cooking. We didn’t even like the Lions or the Cowboys, but it became tradition to switch over after the parade and watch the games. I can remember vividly the aroma coming from the kitchen and keep in mind… this little boy didn’t eat anything...

Why is it so hard to avoid the lifestyles of the rich when most of us are not rich? I have slowly begun to learn the best things in life, including good “stuff”, come only at the expense of personal discipline. Henry David Thoreau once said, "Almost any man knows how to earn money, but not one in a million knows how to spend it." We must limit our style of living. Lesson #1 – figure out what your income is and then proceed to live far below that mark. You may be thinking, “That is impossible”. It’s not impossible: difficult, maybe, not impossible. It will take time to undo some of the messes you have created – but it...

I had the privilege of screening the new movie FireProof yesterday and I must say that I was very impressed. FireProof releases this fall September 26th. Fireproof is the third feature film from Sherwood Pictures—the creators of Facing the Giants and Flywheel. With hope-filled, heartfelt storytelling, the moviemaking ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church continues to touch the world from Albany, Georgia. The Story: At work, inside burning buildings, Capt. Caleb Holt (played by Kirk Cameron) lives by the old firefighter's adage: Never leave your partner behind. At home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules. After seven years of marriage, Caleb and Catherine Holt have drifted so far apart that Catherine wishes she had never...

Every spring our team works extremely hard and prays extensively to plan locations for our marriage events for the upcoming year. It is quite a process, but we have a fantastic team in house and on the field. I am excited to tell you that we have a total of 25 events all over the country in 2009. We added event locations out west and in the New England area. We are headed to Seattle, Farmington, Phoenix, Glorieta and San Diego on the west coast. Boston, Essex Junction, Ocean City and Fredericksburg are a few of the east coast locations. Stay tuned in by visiting our website at lifeway.com/marriage. Now that locations are confirmed, next steps include design work, printing...

A couple of months ago we found out (again) that two of our friends got a divorce. They were a church-going, Christ-loving couple that just grew tired of each other and wanted a change. It was heart wrenching when we heard the news. We hadn't seen them in a while but wondered if we should have seen it coming. Similar situations happen every week...but this one seemed so close to home. Even though it has been 2 months, we still find ourselves asking the tough questions like... why? what happened? how old are their kids? It makes us feel sick, tired and crushed by the pain knowing this is another couple choosing the easy way out. But really... how easy...

A Friend sent me "The Stranger" story this week... I have no idea who the author is, but thought it was interesting enough to post and give us something to think about. What do you think? A few months before I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small Tennessee town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom...

This weekend we had our 3rd Great Marriage Experience conference of the year at Windermere Community Church in Orlando, FL. These conferences just get better and better! The church was a great host and the volunteers were amazing! Even though it was 95 degrees and our bookstore, lunch and break was outside under the pavilion, no one seemed to care or maybe they're just used to sticky hot weather. Before every conference, Gary and Barb fine tune their message just a little bit making sure it is just right. It's a fine balance to speak in a large setting and give practical information but also challenge listeners in a way that has them going home digging for more. The sessions...
