wherethewildthingsare.jpgWhat was your favorite children's book growing up? I still fondly remember Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I loved it so much (and still have not seen the movie based on it)! goodnightgorilla.jpg

We read so many books to our boys that I can't even begin to list their favorites. When we visited the beach with our family in May, we found a new favorite that I read with my 18-month-old nephews, Noah and Nicholas: Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann.

In My Bath Cover.jpgThis July, ParentLife is going to give away a children's book to the first 25 people* who post on our blog this month. We have a closet full of children's books and are looking forward to sharing them with you! ParentLife writer Beth Bence Reinke's new book In My Bath is just one of the 25 titles we are giving away!

So let us hear from you during July! What was your favorite children's book growing up? What is your child's favorite book now?

*LifeWay employees are not eligible for this giveaway. Limit one book per family. Winners will be announced on August 1, 2010.

Jennifer Holmes:

I have too may to list, but Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See is my favorite. It represents bright colors in the animal pictures, and it teaches children repetitous sounds. When I use to teach 12 two yr. olds, their face would light up everytime I read it. They would make the animal sounds.

Jessica:

My son just loves ready Good Night Gorilla. He loves the page with all of the zoo animals eyes on it. I love this book because it allows for any child to create the story.

Hi,
My favorite book as a child was Charlotte's Web. I loved animals and loved words. I could really identify with Charlotte's dilemma of trying to find just the right word to spin in the web.
Today my boys could listen to Swiss Family Robinson over and over again. In fact, they do. Since I refuse to read it more than once a year, they frequently listen on audio.

Ashley Carter:

My favorite books growing up were the Babysitter's club series. I used to babysit so it was fun to read those. My little girl, who is 20 months old, absolutely loves anything with Elmo or Dora.

Michele Choate:

Growing up I enjoyed the Nancy Drew stories . I didn't have very many books as a very young child. My son's favorite book changes rapidly but currently it is Toy Story

Ann Eide:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Little Golden Books like the Swift Family, Saggy Baggy Elephant and Uncle Remus.

Today my son loves to read as much as I do. He is very creative and loves to entertain others with his own stories.

I know I'm not eligible to win, but I wanted to join in the conversation anyway. =)

One of my favorites was (and is)
The Giant Jam Sandwich.
It's about... exactly what the title suggests. And it's written in good end-rhyming couplets, so it appeals to verbal and auditory learners. The illustrations are fun, reminiscent of Monty Python style (but not risqué, of course!), so you have the appeal to visual learners.

Christine Hall:

The House that Had Enough, Icky Picky Sister and The house in the hole in the side of the tree.

My kids actually love all three of those too! I brought them home from my parents house the last time we were there. Another of my son's favorites is Fox in Socks (specifically the Tweedle Beetle tongue twister).

Tricia Gray:

I loved reading Goodnight, Moon & The Giving Tree when I was younger. My daughter loves The Princess & the Three Knights, its an awesome book. I LOVE reading it to her.

Peter:

As a young child, it was probably "Good Night, Moon" (at least according to my mom and I figure she should know). Once older, I was an avid reader of Encyclopedia Brown and The Three Investigators as well as other mystery-themed books.

My daughter likes Cam Jansen, Nancy Drew & the Clue Crew, and the A-Z Mysteries right now.

Brooke:

My kids' favortie infant/toddler books where the Usborne "That's Not My..." series. They currently love Llama Llama! We sing the words to a variety of tunes just because they are so fun to repeat.

Emily Acevedo:

My boys have not always loved books, but they are starting to and I am glade. We love reading all Dr Susse and now they like the ones that go along with the popular movies.

Darcey:

I always liked Goodnight Gorilla, Goodnight Moon and I Love you Stinky Face. Now my older kids are a little older and are starting to read. I am reading to them the June B. Jones books. We were laughing so hard.

I loved the Babysitters Club books as well... when I sas younger it was the Berenstein Bears... specifically the Spooky Old Tree and The Monster at the End of this Book (a Sesame Street book). I read the last two to my children now! They also have all loved Goodnight Moon. :)

Wendy Snipes:

I loved Brown Bear, Brown Bear as a child. But with my children, I love to read the Llama Llama books! They are so cute :) The Max Lucado children books are awesome as well.

Stacy B.:

As a child I loved Green Eggs and Ham. I think my dad can still recite it from memory! My daughter loves books and Polar Bear, Polar Bear is one of her favorites...now I can recite that one from memory!

I loved Green Eggs and Ham so much that my grandmother recorded herself reading it so I could listen to it constantly! I had the story memorized before I could read.

Bernedette Wilson:

I love Robert Munch's books - Paperbag Princess was my personal favourite! And of course the Garfield books by Jim Davis! Life was just that much bette with Garfield!

Amanda:

My favorite book when I was little was Go Do Go! It's still irresistible to ask, "Do you like my hat?" anytime we place something silly on our heads as a hat.

Terri Dell:

I always loved the Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Anderson and my kids love Harold and the Purple Crayon.

Laci:

I loved reading, but my favorites were all the Ramona books. My son also loves to read, and we read lots of books. His favorites right now are Fish Kisses, Dr. Seuss's Oh, the thinks you can think, Goodnight Moon, and anything about trucks, tractors, or animals!

Jennie:

As a child, my favourite book was the fairytale: "The Little Red Hen." My Mum tells me she'd have to read it over and over again to me. I also remember enjoying 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. I read this one to my children now that I'm a parent.

If I had to pick a current favourite, I'd chose 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson, a British author. She has several wonderful rhyming picture books, but is probably most well-known for 'The Gruffalo'. We own a copy and I've given away copies as birthday gifts to my daughter's friends.

Carrie:

My favorite book growing up was NO More Elephants by Jerry Smath. The funny thing is my Mom saved that book and now it is one of my kids favorites too! :)
