Window Covering Safety Month--and a GIVEAWAY!

--Comments (16)

** Congratulations to Joanne ... the winner of these Kenney Truly CordFree Roman Shades! Thanks to everyone for participating! **

Safety is a concern for everyone, especially parents.  An important part of raising children is careful supervision of their activities in the home.  Parents need to be aware of their children’s surroundings at all times in order to anticipate and prevent potential injury.  One of the most overlooked areas in the home is the window.  Whether open or closed, windows are a potential hazard to the safety and well-being of toddlers and young children.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and independent retailers joined forces to designate October as National Window Covering Safety Month to raise awareness of the dangers posed by window covering cords. CPSC data shows that since 1996, there have been reports of 147 children having died as a result of accidental strangulation from window covering cords.

cordfree-blinds.jpgIn recent years, the window covering industry has redesigned its corded products and developed cord-safety standards.  However, millions of older corded window coverings have not been retrofitted by consumers and many new parents are sometimes unaware of potential cord dangers.

The campaign urges parents and caretakers to replace their blinds with cordless window coverings. We're here to help you do that!

One lucky winner will receive two Kenney Truly CordFreeTM roman shades, courtesy of Kenney Manufacturing. We had the opportunity to review these roman shades and they look awesome! As a mom of a very active toddler, I (Jessie) am continually worried about the hazard of the old blinds in our house. What a way to relieve one worry of my day.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post sharing one thing you worry about in your home, pertaining to your kids or grandkids. We will select a winner on November 2 from all valid entries. LifeWay employees are not eligible.

I also worry about our older shades with cords. We have updated several of them, but still have quite a few cords. The biggest thing I worry about is one of our upstairs windows doesn't latch properly and there is no screen on it. We've tried a window locking device but it is kind of a weird window and it didn't work right. I'm always afraid my 3 year old is going to figure out that she can get it open.

shay:

windows with cords are definitely a safety issue. the main issue is the knots that people put in them. if you must have corded blinds, make sure there are no knots in the cords!!!

Chelle:

I worry about doors being locked with my children in the rooms. I need to get some of those stoppers that the children can't reach. Blinds with cords also worry me. I make sure that they can't reach them. Thanks for the chance to win.

Well now i'm scared about the cords!! I worry about tripping while holding things, I worry about electrical outlets, i worry about falling down the stairs, i worry about falling backwards on a chair they shouldn't be standing on, i think the list goes on and on :\

Lara Winton:

I worry about them pulling our tall lamps over on themselves. We try to keep them in corners and away from temptation but the 15 month old likes to stand on the bottom and shake it. I think they are going to have to leave the house till she gets older... :) Thanks for such a great giveaway!

Jude:

Since my youngest sister is so much younger than I am, her two children are my surrogate grandchildren, and I do worry about my house being safe for them. Since they're on the floor so much,

I worry about the dirt on the floor, and try to have everyone take their shoes off when they come into the house. I've also changed the cleaning products I use, and I've install the hooks for my roman shades quite high on the wall so they can't reach them, but there are several large shades that worry me -- little ones can get so rambunctious! I'd like to replace my picture window shades, but they're very expensive...so I'd love to win!

Thanks for the chance at this great giveaway.
A big "wave" from Cape Cod,
Jude

I definitely worry about the cords on shades although 90% of ours are fixed. our baby is 10 months old and just starting to get into things! I also worry about sharp corners but we use corner bumpers

Sarah:

This is exactly what I worry about - window covering cords! Just last night we caught our toddler playing with the cords to our blinds!!

Renae H:

I do worry about the blind cords, but not as much as the stairs. Especially when a not-quite-awake toddler is walking down them in the morning!

Angela:

I would worry about them swallowing something they shouldn't!

Ann:

I worry about cord on blinds as well!

Latoshia:

I worry about dressers or shelves falling over on the kiddos.

Kelly:

So many things to worry about : ) Our daughter just started walking and our lazy susan is a worry since I can't find anyway to install locks; it's a weird, old style. I also worry about her falling in the bath tub, even empty.

Joanne:

I worry about my children getting things off of tables or counters that I didn't realize they could reach (I have tall children). I worry about them getting caught in the blind cords. I worry about them pulling out plugs. I guess I'm worried about all the usual stuff.

i have always worried about the cords on blinds, play capes stuff with strings that if I am not around and or they fall asleep with them and get tangled up some how.

Casey:
