May Giveaway: Books from Andrew Peterson!
In the June 2011 issue of ParentLife, we're featuring Andrew Peterson, a Christian recording artist and author. (He wrote one of my favorite Christmas songs, "Labor of Love," which is on the album The Nativity Story: Sacred Songs. — Jessie)
Peterson's third book in his Wingfeather Saga, The Monster in the Hollows, releases May 24. These books are young-adult fantasy, following the royal family of Janner Wingfeather. The first book, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, was released in 2008 and accoladed as funny, imaginative, and clever. The second, North! Or Be Eaten, won a Christy Award in 2010 for the Best Young Adult Fiction. The Monster in the Hollows will continue to lead readers down curious trails with mystery, humor, and action. Check out this description:
Janner Wingfeather’s father was the High King of Anniera. But his father is gone. The kingdom has fallen. The royal family is on the run, and the Fang armies of Gnag the Nameless are close behind. Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollows—a land of warriors feared even by the Fangs of Dang. But there’s a big problem. Janner’s little brother—heir to the throne of Anniera—has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows he looks like a monster. But Janner knows better. His brother isn’t as scary as he looks. He’s perfectly harmless.
Or is he?
Lucky for you, we have five copies of The Monster in the Hollows to give away to ParentLife Online readers!

The Hobbit.

It's so hard to pick what my favorite fantasy book is. I have many favorite series (Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.) and Andrew's books are up there as well. But picking just one? That's tough. I suppose if I had to pick just one (and it's part of a series too) it would have to be C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet, or maybe Perelandra. The imagery is simply amazing.

My favorite fantasy book is 100 Cupboards by N. D. Wilson.

Our family really loves Andrew Peterson's Wingfeather Saga...and I cherish the time I got to spend with my children reading the first two books to them.
I also really love the Chronicles of Narnia series.
Sheesh...there really are too many good fantasy books to list. ;)

There are so many great fantasy books out there. I would have to say my favorite are JRR Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
I've been a huge fan of AP's since "The Chasing Song" was being played on the radio more than 10 years ago. He is a phenomenal word-smith.

The Chronicles of Narnia series!!! The Last Battle was my favorite in the series.
Posted on May 9, 2011 11:58 AM
Favorite fantasy book is probably "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" by C.S. Lewis.

I loved the first two book in Andrew Peterson's series and this is a hard question to answer since fantasy is my favorite genre, but I think Kathy Tyers "Firebird" is my all time favorite.

One of my favorite fantasy books is George MacDonald's, The Princess and the Goblin.

Narnia is so magical!
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:14 PM
My favorites are also The Lord of the Rings, and specifically The Return of the King.
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:15 PM
Easily the best is The Lord of the Rings trilogy, particularly The Fellowship of the Ring. It's a great set-up for the rest of the story and really begins the development of such heroic characters.
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:16 PM
Mine is C.S Lewis book called The magicians nephew.
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:17 PM
The Riddle-Master trilogy by Patricia McKillip (The Riddle-Master of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire, Harpist in the Wind) has always held a special place in my heart.
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:21 PM
Our family has really enjoyed The Wingfeather Saga as well. I would love to win a copy! The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie are favorites as well.
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:21 PM
It'd have to be the Narnia series (beloved from childhood).
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:27 PM
I just finished reading The Voyage of the Dawntreader, which is my favorite of all fantasy books, though reading the first two Wingfeather books gives me similar delight.

That "favorite Christmas song" that Andrew wrote (and sings with Jill Phillips) called LABOR OF LOVE is actually on Andrew Peterson's amazing Christmas album called BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD. You should check out the whole cd.
And Labor Of Love has been rerecorded and released by other great artist like Point of Grace, and country music legend Randy Travis.

Peterson, the Harry Potter series by Rowlands, the 100 cupboards series and the Imortal Life of Nicolas Flamel series by Michael Scott....whew! just to name a few.

The Wingfeather Saga ranks in the top along with The Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and Harry Potter!
Posted on May 9, 2011 12:45 PM
Andrew Peterson's books are all great. As are the Narnia books and Lord of the Rings/Hobbit books.
One that you will almost never hear mentioned but is a GREAT fantasy book is one that Steven King wrote (I know what you are thinking but hear me out) for his daughter. He realized his daughter was too young (at the time) to be able to read and appreciate his horror stories so he wrote a book for her. It is called Eyes Of The Dragon, and it is really pretty good. Find out more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eyes_of_the_Dragon

Wingfeather Saga! = ) Besides that, Narnia. = )

The Lion, Witch, & the Wardrobe...
So telling for all of us in every lifestyle. It speaks to us about our own Deceit, Denial, and Determination. Not to mention it is a beautiful segue for children and adults to capture the magnificence that is the Gospel.

I agree with the other posts, that the Wingfether Saga, The Chronicles of Narnia and the Tolkien books are favourites.
However, The Tower of Geburah by John White has been a favourite of mine ever since I was a kid.

Not trying to suck up I promise, but Andrew's Wingfeather Saga is not only my favorite but also the favorite of my 2 girls. We read them together. :)
Posted on May 9, 2011 1:17 PM
The first two of the Wingfeather Saga are definitely favs.
But I think I'm going to have to go with a classic, Peter Pan. The Wizard of Oz is also up there. (Of course the books, not the movies).
Posted on May 9, 2011 1:18 PM
I like the Dragonspell books.
Posted on May 9, 2011 1:22 PM
After much indecision, our household's vote for the best single fantasy book goes to "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis.
Best series would go to the Wingfeather Saga, but it's difficult to commit to that since we haven't read them all yet. :) (keep on writing, A.P.! )
Posted on May 9, 2011 1:26 PM
I have to go with Narnia, too! Myboys would vote for Andrew's stuff -- we love him!
Posted on May 9, 2011 2:08 PM
Favorite fantasy book would go to the Wingfeather Saga. They are right up there with the Chronicles of Narnia. Can't wait to read Monster in the Hollows!

Favorite is The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe
Posted on May 9, 2011 6:03 PM
I have to say that The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is the current favorite for my son and I. I am reading it to him for the first time. Nothing like a first exposure to a great book and world. I am looking forward to introducing him to the Wingfeather Saga soon.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman. :)
Posted on May 9, 2011 7:14 PM
I'll be a heretic. The Harry Potter series is my favorite series and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is my favorite of the series. Narnia is a close second.
Posted on May 9, 2011 9:31 PM
Has to be the Narnia books.
Posted on May 9, 2011 9:44 PM
What is your favorite fantasy book?
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness
Posted on May 9, 2011 9:51 PM
I think if it really boils down to just one, i'd have to choose the Hobbit, even though that feels like a cop out. I am really loving M.T. Anderson's The Game of Sunken Places though. Perhaps a bit more on the sci-fi/fantasy side than strictly fantasy.
Posted on May 9, 2011 10:27 PM
First of all, I LOVE Andrew Peterson's books. I'm so excited to read the last one.
And my favorite fantasy books (besides AP's) are definitely Harry Potter. I feel like lots of people would say that, but I love them to the point that I wish the characters were real people and were my friends. I have dreams of flying on a broomstick and playing Quidditch. I want to drink butterbeer and eat chocolate frogs. I'm in love.
Posted on May 9, 2011 11:41 PM
I'm also a Narnia fan, especially The Magician's Nephew.
Posted on May 10, 2011 9:06 AM
Hard question, but I'll go with North! Or Be Eaten. But that might change by the time I read Monster in the Hollows.
Posted on May 10, 2011 9:29 AM
I'd have to go with North! Or Be Eaten. :)
Posted on May 10, 2011 9:52 AM
I would have to say the Wingfeather saga is fast becoming a favorite alongside The Aedyn Chronicles by Alister McGrath. Kids would say Harry Potter is near the top.
Posted on May 10, 2011 7:51 PM
I love The Lord of the Rings series!! I have really enjoyed the Wingfeather Saga and cant wait to read them to my son when he is old enough!!!
Posted on May 11, 2011 9:44 AM
Madeline L'Engle's A Ring of Endless Light will always be dear to my heart.
