For December, we have TWO great products to give away. Woo hoo! Not to mention we'll be announcing the winners of the If Recordable Storybook today!
Penny Love is the story of a grandmother who uses a penny on the ground as an object lesson for her granddaughter. She tells the girl that everytime she finds a penny, she can remember her grandmother loves her. One Amazon reviewer predicts it could be the next "Love You Forever" — a timeless book that treasures relationships. We have five copies of Penny Love to give away to our readers!
In our December issue, we recommended the YakPak Deluxe DJ bag. Unfortunately, that bag is out of stock right now; but we're glad to offer another wonderful YakPak bag, the Student Backpack, instead. Is your kid's backpack already beat up from one semester of use? The traditional backpack gets the job done while keeping you looking good. One winner will receive a YakPack Student Backpack in their choice of available pattern. They have everything from camo to leopard print to music notes!
To enter both giveaways, just leave a comment telling us what your Christmas plans are this year. Will you travel? Celebrate in January? Bake cookies while tap-dancing to Jingle Bells? We want to know!
Winners will be selected by random December 30, 2011. USA only. LifeWay employees are not eligible to win.
The two winners of Reshaping It All by Candace Cameron Bure are Kristin and Dianne. Congrats, ladies! We'll be in touch.

Flowerpot Press’ Record-A-Story series lets your child enjoy a book read by a loved one who lives far away or is stationed overseas. The newest title in the series, by Frank Boylan, is called If. Simple buttons allow the reader to record the text of each page. To hear the story read aloud later, the child simply pushes the button that corresponds to the page number. Sentimental moments will happen when your child hears, “If I was there I would tell you I love you,” or “If I was there I would hug you, or laugh with you, or play games with you.”
If captures the spirit and voice of the very people who would most like to sit side by side and read a favorite book but are instead on two different sides of town or in different corners of the world. This is the perfect original story for grandparents who live far away, parents who travel on business frequently, aunts and uncles who live across the country, godparents who don’t get to see little ones often enough, or military parents serving their country. The fun format and touching story makes an amazing gift.
We have THREE copies of If to give away! Just answer this question in the comments: who would you give the book to if you won?
Winners will be chosen by random December 2, 2011. USA only. LifeWay empoyees are not eligible to win.

Do you remember the episode of Full House where DJ is convinced she has to go on a crash diet for Kimmy's birthday pool party? Preteen DJ refuses to eat, goes nuts at the gym, and ends up collapsing on the fitness center's floor. (While Danny, Uncle Jesse, and Joey flirt through a women's aerobics class and look foolish, of course.) OK, so maybe you haven't seen every episode of Full House 43 times like I have. But many others have as well, and little DJ still has a big fan club. Candace Cameron Bure is now a mother of three and has released her first book, Reshaping It All, to great acclaim.
Candace is in the best shape of her life with no trainer, no nanny and no chef after battling eating disorders.
In the book, Candace talks about:
- her never-before-discussed battle with food addiction, and the effect that it had on her childhood acting career as well as her life as a wife and mother.
- the power of spiritual health in making it possible to achieve physical health.
- tips to help overcome the temptations of overeating and living a sedentary lifestyle.
- practical advice for choosing healthier food options and becoming motivated to be more active.
- guidance for maintaining a lifelong healthy outlook and avoiding the pitfalls of yo-yo dieting.
- fast and easy recipes from her own kitchen.
Reshaping It All is a motivational tool to put readers on the right track toward a better physical and spiritual fitness regimen that really lasts. In addition to practical advice and fun stories, Candace offers a biblical perspective on appetite and self-control. For our November giveaway, we have two copies of Reshaping It All for our ParentLife Online readers! To enter, leave a comment on this entry answering this question: What is your favorite TV show to watch in reruns?
Giveaway is over! Winners are Kristin and Dianne!
You can follow Candance on Twitter @candacecbure. And while you're there, follow us too @ParentLife!
Winners will be selected by random November 30, 2011. USA only. LifeWay employees are not eligible to enter.

Congratulations to the winners of our October giveaway! These five blessed commenters will receive a copy of Holy Curiosity by Amy Hollingsworth. The winners are:
Once again, congratulations, and stay tuned for some more great giveaways in November!
Jessie Weaver-
October 4, 2011-
Amy Hollingsworth and I have many things in common, as far as I can tell from the first chapter of her book. We both loved Mr. Rogers (only he was her mentor and I only knew him from my stool in front of the television). We both have connections to Mary Washington University (she as a professor; my sister graduated from there). We each have a daughter and a son. We both have an intense love for the foreign film Babette's Feast. And we both see ourselves as creative souls.
Only Amy wrote a book about it.
Holy Curiosity is Hollingsworth's third work of nonfiction, and one that's been highly acclaimed. The subtitle says it all: Cultivating the Creative Spirit in Everyday Life.
On the verge of her first teaching on creativity, Hollingsworth is given a dream that speaks to her. She believed she was missing something, a key to creativity. And she found it in a short Bible passage. This book explores her lessons.
With an introduction and first chapter that include Babette's Feast, a high-school English class, Steinbeck, and how her children ignite poetry, I want to get my hands on the rest of this tome and dig in.
"You know that best afternoon ever, with the rain outside, and the comfy chair inside, and the good book --a glorious, quiet revelation of a book--and the family dog sleeping at your feet? This is that book. You'll have to bring your own dog." --Sean Herriott, host of national radio program 'Morning Air' on Relevant Radio
If you're as eager as I am to read Amy's book, you're in luck! We have five copies to give away in October. To enter, just answer the following question in the comments:
What's your creative outlet?

Have you ever wanted to sit down and have a talk with Jeremy Camp, famed Christian singer/songwriter? You can come pretty close when you read his autobiography, I Still Believe.
On the Contemporary Christian music scene for the last 9 years, Camp finally reveals all the details of his growing-up, brief marriage to Melissa and becoming a widower at 23, and how God unfolded the rest of His story through Jeremy's life and songs.
Full of personal stories, friendships and family relationships, grief and tears and joy, Camp's story is one of emerging from great trials and how it affected his relationship with his Heavenly Father.
We are thankful to have two copies to give away for our September Giveaway!

"I want what she has." How many of us have said that? I sure know that I don't have it all together. Trying to be a full-time mom, housekeeper, wife, and freelancer usually explodes in my face. My house is a mess. My toddler watches too much TV. My baby doesn't get as many baths as he should. The laundry is piled everywhere. There are ants dancing in the kitchen.
Marybeth Whalen's second and newest book, She Makes It Look Easy, deals with this very topic. Here's the blurb from the publisher, David C. Cook: Ariel Baxter has moved into the neighborhood of her dreams — and the chaos of raising three children moved with her. Then she meets her neighbor, Justine Miller. Justine ushers Ariel into a world of clutter-free houses, fresh-baked bread, homemade crafts, neighborhood playdates, and organization techniques designed to make marriage better and parenting manageable. Soon Ariel realizes there is hope for peace, friendship, and clean kitchen counters. But when rumors start to circulate about Justine's real home life, Ariel must choose whether to believe the best about the friend she admires or consider the possibility that "perfection" isn't always what it seems to be.
I haven't read this book yet, but it was featured by the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance, so I was able to read several reviews. From what I read, it's a heart-piercing novel that is both fiction and true to life. It may be a smack in the face ... or just the assurance you need that no one has it all together, really.
Would you like to win a copy of Whalen's novel? We have TEN autographed copies to give away, courtesy of David C. Cook. To enter, just leave a comment on this post telling us what the best book you've read recently was. (If it's Green Eggs and Ham, that's OK too!) — Jessie

Jodi Skulley-July 20, 2011-
The Great Commission, Jesus’ command to go into the world and make disciples, stands at the heart of evangelicalism ― yet what does this mean for stay-at-home mothers? This calling to engage the world for Christ is given to every believer, and it does not change when we become mothers. But it is also true that when children enter the picture, our lives are changed dramatically.
Not all moms are called to pick up their families and move to a needier neighborhood; not all moms are meant to lobby in front of world leaders. But a mom who chooses to say, “I am willing. And God can,” can have a powerful missional influence wherever she is.
There is no formula for how to become a mom who engages with the world. But here are four steps to consider if you would like to move from a posture of retreating from the world into one that addresses its needs.
- Place yourself where you can see, hear, and become aware of the needs around you. Read newspapers and magazines to keep current with what is happening in the world. Sign up to be a part of the One Campaign.
- Pray that the Holy Spirit would speak to you if there is a particular issue He wants you to address or confront. Ask specifically that the Spirit would move in your heart in a strong way so you can discern God’s leading.
- Probe to gain a deeper understanding of a particular issue that is calling for your attention. You can start simply by responding to the tugging on your heart by doing more research to understand the issue better.
- Participate with God in helping combat the issue with concrete steps of action. These actions can be as small as picking up the telephone or signing an online petition in support of legislation; they could be bigger steps of faith as you grow in your knowledge and understanding of how God wants to use you. As you begin to take concrete steps of faith, your way will become clearer regarding how God will use you to make a difference in the world.
As you adopt a missional outlook, I encourage you to keep your eyes, ears, hearts, and minds open to where and how God might want to use you. You may never relocate your family to a poor neighborhood or fly off to Africa, but God can use you in big and small ways, if you will let Him.
One way to adopt a missional outlook is to understand your home as a missional outpost ― a place where you nurture and raise your children for a lifetime of participating in God’s mission to the world. Your home is a base for powerful missional activity to take place: invite neighborhood kids over for lunch and pray together before the meal, sponsor a child in a foreign country, or have your kids help you pick out grocery items for your church’s food pantry.
Whether you are in a vocational setting, a school volunteer committee, at the grocery store or school music rehearsal, or a neighborhood playgroup, you have the chance to do God’s work ― in other words, to be missional.
Helen Lee is the author of The Missional Mom: Living with Purpose at Home and in the World, which released in January from Moody Publishers. Helen is a homeschooling mom of three and lives with her family in Chicagoland.Would you like to win a copy of The Missional Mom? We have FIVE copies to give away! To enter, simply comment with one way you (or your wife ... or someone you know!) tries to be missional in their parenting.

Congratulations! Don't forget to comment on our July Giveaway post to win a copy of Sheila Walsh's book God's Shelter for Your Storm.
Jodi Skulley-June 29, 2011-
They are questions we've all asked: Why is this happening? Does God really care about me? Does my life even matter? Why won't God fix ...?
God's Shelter for Your Storm is a gift book from celebrated author Sheila Walsh. Adapted from her trade book The Shelter of God's Promises, this small book would be an appropriate gift for someone grieving, struggling, or facing one of life's storms.
Walsh incorporates personal stories with Scripture passages and encouragements. Each chapter is themed, explicating one promise of God.
A beloved author of nonfiction and children's works as well as a Women of Faith speaker, Walsh writes with the gentle, personal tone of Max Lucado, with a feminine touch. This is an excellent book to keep by your bedside for a daily dose of encouragement when times are hard. You can see a video from Sheila as well as some more information about the book at sheilawalsh.com/shelter.
Would you like to win a copy of this beautiful and timely book? Thomas Nelson has graciously given us three copies to give away to our readers. This will be our July giveaway, so you have all month to enter!

How do you give a gift to God?
That is the question addressed in Ronnie Wilson's Gift, the third children's book in Francis Chan's parable series. Chan expounds on Christ's words in Matthew 25:40, "And the King will answer them, 'I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.' "
The illustrations by Jim Madsen are expressive, colorful, and interesting; the picture of Ronnie shaking money out of his piggy bank to buy a homeless man a hot dog made me grin.

Francis Chan is the author of the highly acclaimed book Crazy Love, which has sold more than 1.3 million copies since its release in 2008.
We have five copies of Ronnie Wilson's Gift to give away this month, thanks to publisher David C. Cook.

If you had to choose one thing in your house to give to God, what would it be? (Let's bypass "our kids" answers, OK? I will say Libbie's copy of Jesus Hears Me ... because I think Jesus would laugh at the illustration of Himself that is truly absurd.) — Jessie

In the June 2011 issue of ParentLife, we're featuring Andrew Peterson, a Christian recording artist and author. (He wrote one of my favorite Christmas songs, "Labor of Love," which is on the album The Nativity Story: Sacred Songs. — Jessie)
Peterson's third book in his Wingfeather Saga, The Monster in the Hollows, releases May 24. These books are young-adult fantasy, following the royal family of Janner Wingfeather. The first book, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, was released in 2008 and accoladed as funny, imaginative, and clever. The second, North! Or Be Eaten, won a Christy Award in 2010 for the Best Young Adult Fiction. The Monster in the Hollows will continue to lead readers down curious trails with mystery, humor, and action. Check out this description:
Janner Wingfeather’s father was the High King of Anniera. But his father is gone. The kingdom has fallen. The royal family is on the run, and the Fang armies of Gnag the Nameless are close behind. Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollows—a land of warriors feared even by the Fangs of Dang. But there’s a big problem. Janner’s little brother—heir to the throne of Anniera—has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows he looks like a monster. But Janner knows better. His brother isn’t as scary as he looks. He’s perfectly harmless.
Or is he?
Lucky for you, we have five copies of The Monster in the Hollows to give away to ParentLife Online readers!

As Christians, we are called to be in this world, but not of this world. Romans 12:2 says, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God." God’s direction here seems very clear to me. He never specified any exceptions or exclusions. Black and white. Small and tall. Old and young. Yesterday and today. We are ALL called to be different.
However, today’s society is becoming increasingly separated from God. Moral standards are being stretched and manipulated. Blatantly sinful behavior is accepted as status quo. Unethical actions are being praised in the name of political correctness. Humans are becoming desensitized by the shocking content of television, movies, and radio. At times I am tempted to ask, What is going on here?! Does God see what is happening to our nation, and does His heart break too as our world is turning into such a modern Sodom and Gomorrah?
I don’t know about you, but as a mother of a 14-year-old boy, I feel that my mother-hen radar is running full force constantly! Thankfully, my sweet boy has surrounded himself with friends who are positive influences and godly young men and women. But my heart breaks over hearing the stories he shares of friends who are struggling. Babies are having babies, children are growing up way too fast, and they are emulating the "new normal" standards they are watching on TV every night. As parents, it's our call to stand up for what is right and good and embrace biblical teachings and standards as the ruler with which we measure ourselves.
John 2:15-17 says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. For all that is in the world ... is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away ... but he that does the will of God abides for ever.”
As parents, entrusted by God to lead these precious lives towards a life of freedom in Him, we have to find a way to show our children the beauty in God’s standards. By rejoicing in His ways, living by his Word, and enjoying every minute of it, we can show our children how blessed the life of a child of the King can be!
The old saying stands, "If everyone else jumps off a bridge, will you jump too?" Just because the kid next door is ruining his reputation online or the kid down the street is wearing the latest ridiculously short shorts, doesn’t mean every child will or has to. Parental guidance is a strong force to be reckoned with! Armed with the truth that a life in the Light is a life filled with peace, grace, and adventure, let’s remind not only our children but also ourselves that God’s standards have not changed with the in’s and out’s of society’s fads. Even if staying on the winning side means being coined "different" or "strange" ... God loves us deeply. Let’s honor that love by being in the world ... not of it.
Sheila Walsh, a successful speaker, is author of the award-winning Gigi, God’s Little Princess series, and other books such as The Shelter of God's Promises and The Heartache No One Sees. Sheila lives in Frisco, Texas, with her husband, Barry, and son, Christian. Want to win a copy of Sheila's latest book, How to Be God's Little Princess, for your little girl? We have FIVE copies of the book and TWO kits that include the book, tiara, bracelet-making kit, and princess cup.
Book description: What does it take to be a princess? Sheila Walsh has some important answers to share for every little girl. The book covers lots of how-to topics — how to make the best pink cookies, how to wear a tiara, how to earn money at home, how to care for a royal dog, how to be respectful, how to use good manners, how to help Mom, how to follow Jesus, how to act like a princess when things go terribly wrong, and many more.To win, just tell us about the little princess(es) in your life who would benefit from the book!

It's also all-encompassing. There was an article for grandparents, single parents, divorced parents and their step-children, and even that rare breed of married couples living with their own children. This would make a great hand-out resource to the families in my church.

One last thing I thought was really neat as a resource for busy families is a monthly calendar that tells you what to do on a certain day to communicate biblical truth in a simple, engaging way.

Jodi Skulley--
If your tween daughter is like 4.5 million other young women in the world, she may have a thing for Justin Bieber. For those parents who have been either on a sequestered jury or in a coma for the last year, I’m talking about a 17-year-old Canadian music sensation who has stolen the hearts of older tweens and younger teens with his you-know-you-love-me good looks and ultra-trendy image.
Should you be concerned when your 12-year-old stares at the cover of her My World CD for hours at a time or can’t miss a single Tweet of Justin’s Twittering? Probably not – for several reasons.
The boy wonder’s career has soared, largely because he has a way of making his young listeners feel like the music is theirs. While we adults are watching him grow up, his fans are busy projecting their new feelings of I-suddenly-like-boys-but-I-don’t-know-what-to-do-about-that onto this boy whose only “flaw” seems to be the fact that he’s singing about deep love and probably doesn’t know a thing about it.
As far as I’ve been able to tell, he isn’t promoting sex or drugs, and he has yet to be in the negative media spotlight except for a few Internet scams. On the other hand, he is providing girls with a chance to express their confusing feelings in an arena that is safe. Justin is not going to ask them out, try to kiss them, or pressure them in any way.
Tweens have been doing that as far back as there have been male celebrities. Hearts have fluttered, passionate screams have been uttered, and posters have been plastered on bedroom walls for decades. And I can’t say that any girl has really been the worse for it. Yes, now and then a young girl gets a little obsessed, but that’s usually when something else is going on in her life.
For the most part, a crush on an unobtainable male figure is not only nothing to worry about – it’s actually a healthy part of a girl’s emergence into womanhood. Before you launch into, “But nobody but God should be her idol!” hear me out. We’ll get to that.
In their tween years, girls naturally feel the first stirrings of attraction to boys. But since the guys their age are, as we call them on my tween blog, “absurd little creeps,” at least to them, girls unconsciously look for somebody a little more perfect to adore. At the same time, while they may even find boys their own age – or a little older – less than absurd or creepy, they don’t know what to do with those feelings. If a boy two years older did flirt with your tween, she would probably turn scarlet all the way to her hair follicles and run for the nearest girls’ restroom to find her BFFs. It is far safer to daydream about a kiss on the cheek from Justin Bieber than to risk having that actually happen with little Michael next door. I think all parents would agree with that!
When girls do develop a “thing” for a star, they want to fully embrace it. It may seem immature to you for your tween to paper the walls with posters of this cutie, spend all her allowance downloading his music onto her mp3 player, and write lengthy fan letters declaring her undying love. But she is immature. She is 10, 11, 12, 13 years old, untangling those sudden confusing feelings about males. She is learning what it feels like to be attracted to somebody. Sure it’s unrealistic. Deep inside, she knows that. She isn't going to carry over this fantasy into real life. She is just enjoying being a girl.
Keep the whole thing in perspective. Your tween is not “worshiping” an idol. She has a crush. When you and your spouse fell in love, did you ditch God and pour all of your affections out on each other? You’re there to guide your tween into a healthy relationship with the Lord, and that will be her frame of reference in relationships. If you’re focusing on living a joyous Christian life with your daughter, she’s going to know that Justin isn't taking His place.
If your daughter does have Bieber Fever – or any other symptom of tween love – be involved. Stay up on the news about her celebrity interest, so if he does succumb to the temptations of fame and go off the proverbial deep end, you can walk your daughter through it, talk about what went wrong, and how that person needs to be prayed for. If Justin starts recording songs of an objectionable nature, step in and say, “I’m not happy with this particular single, and here’s why.”
Just like anything else she passes through on her journey to womanhood, this is important to your daughter. Making fun of her, putting down her feelings, guilting her are not your best ways to help her down the path. Keep your sense of humor, and at the very least remember the cassette tapes you wore out listening to Michael W. Smith or U2. I firmly believe that God is laughing right along with you.
Nancy Rue is an award-winning author who’s written over 100 books for adults and tweens, and she travels around the country speaking to tween girls and their moms at FaithGirlz events. Moms’ Ultimate Guide to the Tween Girl World is Rue's first book written specifically for parents. She turned her attention to parents after mothers repeatedly asked her for advice on raising their tween daughters. Her latest book is for dads and releases this month: What Happened to My Little Girl?
This month we have 3 copies of Moms' Ultimate Guide to the Tween Girl World and 3 copies of What Happened to My Little Girl? to give away! To enter, just answer this question: Who was your biggest celebrity crush?

It's February already? That means my sweet baby boy is six weeks old, and I am back to ParentLife blogging!
This month we're giving away several copies of the book I Will Carry You by Angie Smith, our new Mom's Life columnist ... starting in March 2011 with the fresh, new design!
I am privileged to know Angie "in real life," not just through her well-read blog. And even though I know her, I knew the story of the book, I attended her daughter's funeral ... I still bawled through the whole thing. If you don't know the story of Audrey, here is the synopsis of the book:

In 2008, Angie Smith and her husband Todd (lead singer of the group Selah) learned through ultrasound that their fourth daughter had conditions making her “incompatible with life.” Advised to terminate the pregnancy, the Smiths chose instead to carry this child and allow room for a miracle. That miracle came the day they met Audrey Caroline and got the chance to love her for the precious two-and-a-half hours she lived on earth.
Upon receiving the original diagnosis, Angie started a blog (Bring the Rain) to keep family and friends informed of their journey. Soon, the site exploded in popularity, connecting with thousands who were either experiencing their own heartbreaking situations or simply curious about how God could carry someone through something so tragic. I Will Carry You tells the powerful story of a parent losing her child, interwoven with the biblical story of Lazarus to help those who mourn to still have hope—to find grace and peace in the sacred dance of grief and joy.

** Congratulations to Joanne ... the winner of these Kenney Truly CordFree Roman Shades! Thanks to everyone for participating! **
Safety is a concern for everyone, especially parents. An important part of raising children is careful supervision of their activities in the home. Parents need to be aware of their children’s surroundings at all times in order to anticipate and prevent potential injury. One of the most overlooked areas in the home is the window. Whether open or closed, windows are a potential hazard to the safety and well-being of toddlers and young children.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and independent retailers joined forces to designate October as National Window Covering Safety Month to raise awareness of the dangers posed by window covering cords. CPSC data shows that since 1996, there have been reports of 147 children having died as a result of accidental strangulation from window covering cords.
In recent years, the window covering industry has redesigned its corded products and developed cord-safety standards. However, millions of older corded window coverings have not been retrofitted by consumers and many new parents are sometimes unaware of potential cord dangers.
The campaign urges parents and caretakers to replace their blinds with cordless window coverings. We're here to help you do that!
To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post sharing one thing you worry about in your home, pertaining to your kids or grandkids. We will select a winner on November 2 from all valid entries. LifeWay employees are not eligible.

Despite the research of pediatricians that supports the benefits of breastfeeding for at least one year, new moms across the nation are given diaper bags full of formula samples and tools for bottle-feeding as they exit the hospital. (Or, in some cases, at the obstetrician’s office as soon as they come in pregnant!)
Cottonwood Kids has developed a breastfeeding support bag for hospitals to distribute called the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag. The bags include samples, coupons, and information that promote a healthy breastfeeding relationship. These bags have been in existence for one year and are currently being distributed at 200+ hospitals in the United States.
The founders have realized, however, that Healthy Baby Bounty Bags is quite the mouthful. Via the Lansinoh By Moms for Moms blog, the company is searching for a new name for the bags. Submissions will be accepted through tomorrow, September 10th, on this blog post. Then the names will be voted on.
The person who comes up with the new name will win a $100 gift card.
We’d love to see one of our own creative readers come up with the new name! Good luck!

What was your favorite children's book growing up? I still fondly remember Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I loved it so much (and still have not seen the movie based on it)!
We read so many books to our boys that I can't even begin to list their favorites. When we visited the beach with our family in May, we found a new favorite that I read with my 18-month-old nephews, Noah and Nicholas: Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann.

What products did you find most helpful as the parent of a newborn? Any recommendations for our expectant parent readers or parents of newborns?
Jodi Skulley-May 3, 2010-
Are you an expectant mother? Having a first child can be overwhelming – with the new bundle of joy comes the new lifestyle, new responsibilities, new sleep schedule, and so much more. An alarming amount of parents can get overwhelmed, particularly in the first few weeks of bringing the baby home. This could be a lot less of a stressful experience knowing some tips beforehand. BornFree has provided some tips below to guide first-time parents in ensuring a more pleasant experience.
- Get your home in order before the baby arrives: Clean, organize, and find a place to store all baby products, so they can be easily accessible.
- Find the places that are open all night and who will deliver to your home – keep a running and accessible list of nearby pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. and have these numbers readily available.
- Keeping your baby safe is the most important. Products that are BPA and chemical free are essential. BPA-free bottles (as well as extra BPA-free nipples) should be ready and plentiful. Consider using BPA-free pacifiers, teethers, and training cups too.
- Try and lock down a sleep schedule ahead of time to adjust to both your needs and your baby needs. Taking turns between parents is a great way to ensure both parties are tending to the baby while taking care of their own health as well and getting as much rest as they possibly can.
- Read up beforehand and do not be afraid to ask your pediatrician questions before the baby even arrives in your home such as what to expect for feeding, sleeping, and general care of your child.

It's hard to believe that a brand new year is upon us! With a new year often comes new goals! Do you have any New Year's resolutions? I am confident that finance-related goals are at the top of many of your lists.
Bad money management habits are hard to change, so the key is to start teaching your children healthy money management skills early. Our January blog giveaway just might be the service you need to help your child! This month we are giving away one 1-year subscription to ThreeJars.com.

ThreeJars.com is an innovative modern allowance system that lets kids earn, track, and use their own money online. With this online service, you set an allowance limit for your child and decide how his allowance will be divvied-up between Save, Spend, and Share jars. Your child manages his own account, but your approval is required for all financial decisions.
- Save — Your child can boost his savings by earning interest from you, encouraging the savings habit.
- Spend — He can spend his money by requesting cash or gift cards.
- Share — He can share money too, by making donations to charities of your choice on or off the ThreeJars.com site. (Don't forget to teach the importance of tithing using the "Share" jar.)
Stop by ThreeJars.com for more details about how this allowance system works.

One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is watching Christmas movies. If your family is looking for a new Christmas movie to enjoy together this season, consider checking out The Perfect Gift (Kelly's Filmworks).
A spoiled schoolgirl (Christina Fougnie), her overworked executive mother (Amy Hess) and a disillusioned young minister (Matt Wallace) each receive an uplifting message about friendship, commitment, and the truest meaning of Christmas from a friendly, but mysterious, drifter named Jess.
One of ParentLife's frequent writers — Mark Smeby — not only plays a supporting role in the film, but his song "Emmanuel (You Are With Me)" is also featured in the movie and on the soundtrack.
Mark is offering a free download of his song to ParentLife readers during the month of December. Right-click on the link below to download the mp3 now.
