Help us, o internet

Melanie - July 29, 2008

Okay, I am in need of some assistance. Actually my beloved Bible study group is in need of assistance and I just know y'all will be able to help us out.

I mentioned before that we first started meeting last summer. We did Beth Moore's "Jesus, The One and Only" study and we all agreed that it was awesome. I loved meeting every week and hearing what everyone had learned as they completed their homework.

Then, last fall, we did "A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place" by Beth Moore. (Is it just me or do you sense a theme?) We loved it and it was really cool to be immersed in the Old Testament after spending the summer learning about Jesus. It allowed us to get a grasp on God's plan from the very beginning.

In the spring, we went through "Believing God", also by Beth. This has been my personal favorite so far because it completely ministered to me where I am at this point in my life. I watched my faith and trust in God grow immeasurably during that time and, even now when I feel the fear and doubt start to rise, I begin to say "God is who He says He is, He can do what He says He can do, I am who God says I am, I can do all things through Christ, God's word is alive and active in me." And I feel his peace envelop me.

Guess what we're doing this summer? Another Beth Moore study. SHOCKING.

It's "A Heart Like His" and is about the life of David. It's pure awesome.

We know we want to meet in the fall, but we're trying to decide on a study. Our summer study is actually going to run through mid-September because of vacation schedules, etc., so we're looking for something that may be a little shorter.

It would be ideal if we could find something that we could finish by early December so that we can break for the holidays.

So what Bible studies have you loved? Any suggestions? Any of you doing Kelly Minter's "No Other Gods" on LPM? Do you love it? We need some input.

Our Bible study future is in your hands.

Seriously, no pressure.

We're counting on you.

I am doing the Kelly Minter - No Other God’s study this summer. I am telling you, it makes you think. And God has been faithful to reveal to me some idols that I didn’t know I had and some that I thought had long ago been dealt with…but maybe not so much.

I think you could get through this study reasonably quickly and the homework takes a bit less time than some other studies (written by someone we all dearly love!). If your group tends to be chatty you may have to keep everyone on track - I think this study will give everyone a lot to talk about.

Kelly writes in a personal style that her readers can relate to. She uses funny and unique stories to get her points across - stuff of everyday life that holds truths and lessons.

I give her study two thumbs up!

Kim:

A good friend recommended a study called “Fight like a girl” by Lisa Bevere. Her group really loved the study and they all received a cool charm braclet (you buy with the study) that has all these CUTE charms relating to being a women for God.

Our women’s group is deciding which Fall study to use too and I am voting for this study- The other choice (besides a Beth Moore, we all love her studies) is the new one by Priscilla Shirer “Can we Talk?”

I do not know how to post a link to view this Lisa Bevere study. You can google the author and see it on their ministry site. My sister has heard her speak and said she is awesome! Have fun deciding! I can’t wait to see all the recommendations!

Kari Decker:

I personally love Beth Moore studies as well and I just finished “Living Beyond Yourself” which is a very applicable study as each week focuses on one of the fruit of the spirit. However, I am a believer that it is good to not just do one persons studies. I am doing “No Other Gods” right now as well and it is a good study and not as time consuming. If you want a little different format for your study I would recommend “Listening for God” by Marilyn Hontz. It is an excellent book and taught me much. Another study my group did last summer is “Damsels in Distress” by Martha Peace. Both of these last two are books with discussion questions and they are ones that I still go back to and think about.

Annette:

You can not go wrong with Kelly Minter’s ‘No other gods’ (10 weeks).

I love fall Bible studies. Enjoy!

If you haven’t done a Priscilla Shirer study, they are AWESOME. The first one we did was He Speaks to Me. Our group LOVED it. We followed up last year with Discerning the Voice of God, and next year we’re doing her new one - Can We Talk?. They are shorter and not as intense on the homework. It speaks right into your situation. Thanks be to God for giving a WORD to these ladies for us!

Cattialmama:

‘When Godly People Do Ungodly Things’ by Beth Moore(this will help you keep your theme!). It’s seven weeks long and if I remember right, the videos are a little shorter than most of hers. It was a great study…I highly recommend it. I’ve also done ‘Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks’ by Priscilla Shirer. Also a great study… Good luck!

Julie:

My group is doing “Stepping Up” by Beth Moore, and we love it! It is six weeks, so it might work in your time frame.

Julie

I just finished a new book called Deeper by Debbie Alsdorf. It was AMAZING! Here is the url… http://deeperbook.com/debbie-alsdorf.htm Let me know if you need more info.

Erica:

I second Susan B. My group studied Priscilla’s Discerning the Voice of God this spring. It was only 6 weeks, but it was a powerful 6 weeks! I would definitely recommend it!

Michele:

I’ve just recently participated in Dee Brestin’s A Woman of Moderation and A Woman of Beauty studies, and they brought so much healing to my soul. WOM is 8 weeks long, and a WOB is a 12 week study.

I did Beth Moore’s “Daniel” Bible study last summer and it rocked my world and changed my life! I’d recommend it to anyone! Also, my mother-in-law Gloria Cotten has written a book called “In the Beginning”. It’s a book about God’s vision for women. It’s not a Bible study, per se, but you will definitely study what the Bible says about glorifying Him as women! So you could turn it into a Bible study - it’s such an insightful book with loads to discuss. You can read much more about it by clicking on my name and going to that link. Or you can go to her website, which is www.wellspringwomen.com

I just finished Beth Moores ‘Stepping Up” this past Spring, an excellent short study.

I whole heartedly agree with a friend who said, just last night,

“I believe Breaking Free should be mandatory for all women to attend!! If we’re honest - we all have baggage!!”

Jill:

I have completed a number of Beth’s bible sutdy’s and I loved so many, but the most recent one was Daniel. It is so educational and you will come to know and live the phrase of “living in Babylon” so buckle your seat belt if you sign, I also love the nugget about King Cyrus…whew…I do love her Holy Spirit downloads that she shares with us… I also wanted to tell you the good news, as of today I will be flying to your great city and seeing you in Aug. with the siestas…can’t wait to meet Caroline’s mama, owner of the giant unicorn.

Kelly’s NOG study is good. There is also Beth’s “When Godly People Do Ungodly Things” and it is so good or “Stepping Up.” They are both shorter studies at 7 weeks including introduction.

Have you considered Mary Kaissian(sp?)? “Vertically Inclined” and “Conversation Peace.” Beth recommends “Conversation Peace.”

Okay so that is what I have for recommendations…

I am leading a Bereaved Moms group that I am writing weekly sessions and homework assignments for right now - we are meeting 12 weeks from September 17 - December 10… we are of the week of Thanksgiving if that is any help to you for how many weeks for approximate planning!

Blessings.

Anything by Priscilla Shirer is great! My Bible study group is doing “Can We Talk” this Fall. Also, if you’ve not done one of Lysa TerKeurst’s book, they’re also good. We did “What Happens When Women Say Yes to God” in six weeks (2 chapters per week). Each chapter ends with questions for discussion. It was challenging and Lysa’s writing is so fun and familiar.

I vote for Beth’s Stepping Up. Just finished it today, and wow! I keep meaning to try other people’s studies, and then I just can’t do it! I can’t get enough of her. She drives me to my knees at my Savior’s feet. Wow.

How about Jennifer Rothschild’s “Walking by Faith: Lessons I Learned in the Dark.” It’s a short but powerful study (6 weeks, 7 with a kickoff meeting). I’m a Beth Moore fan myself and find myself balking when another study besides hers is chosen simply because I love hers so much — but this study did not disappoint and I quickly came to love Jennifer’s as well!

Fran:

Maybe do Kelly Minter’s study or one of Priscilla’s studies since they are typically 6 or 8 weeks. Just a thought. We are doing the no other God study this Fall.

I hear its pretty good! :)

Priscilla’s “Discerning the Voice of God” blessed me more than I could have imagined. I am doing Beth Moore’s “Stepping Up” now and I absolutely love the homework. I don’t know if it is just because it is from the Psalms but I can’t put it down.

gin in tn:

Our group finishes “David” this week. We are doing Priscilla Shirer next. (Discerning the Voice of God) A good friend just finished it. She said it was AWESOME! Kay Arthur has some short ones also.

Good Luck!!

I have always enjoyed Beth’s studies, but girls, you need to branch out a bit! My group just finished Enjoy: A thirst-quenching look at Philippians by Tianne Moon. What I loved about this study: it is designed to equip you with tools to study the Bible for yourself, and Philippians is a wonderful book, truly full of joy. It’s also a video-driven study, so it’s easy on the leader. What I didn’t like so much: Tianne is stuck on the ‘Christ-follower’ versus Christian label. I noticed it every time she said it, but I don’t think everyone else in the group did. If that kind of thing doesn’t bother you, then go for it! I also highly recommend Liz Curtis Higgs’ study on Jacob/Rachel/Leah. Liz is reliably hilarious and a great teacher, and the study has a video as well.

Lara Harris:

All of the suggestions are great, and for a shorter study, When Godly People… is great and Steeping Up also. One that hasn’t been mentioned yet and was absolutely incredible is Beautiful Offering by Angela Thomas. It is a six week study also, so it may work timewise for you all. It was the first study other than a Beth Moore that I have led in many years and it was sooooooo good. The ladies were so moved.

We have done many of Beth’s studies over the past 5 years or so. LOVE THEM.

But, when we needed a shorter study, we did Priscilla Shirer’s Can We Talk? LOVED IT.

It can transform the way you read your Bible. I would highly recommend it.

Amy:

Yes, No Other gods is wonderful and our group is studying it right now. The hardest part about starting something different is that Beth’s studies are always so rich and full of depth. I personally love the homework and the challenging questions. They make me contemplate and dig in to the Word! Some others that have been great are Jennifer Rothschild’s Walking By Faith, Women of Faith Study Guide Series: Cultivating Contentment and Max Lucado’s Inspirational Study series. I’ve heard Mary Kaissan’s Conversation Peace is good and I’d like to do that one. I’ve also heard Anne Graham Lotz’s Just Give Me Jesus is good, too. I hope you find one that will impact your group to live boldly for Christ! Enjoy!

Amanda:

I suggest Beth Moore’s “Stepping Up”. My mom was absolutely changed by the study with her Sunday School class. They loved that it was a shorter study in weeks, but it was “on your face’ before Him. Pretty cool stuff!

I am so loving No Other gods. So is our group here in Monument, CO. It is so good!!

Other ideas: Anne Graham Lotz’s study on Revelations. Beth’s Patriarch’s goes hand in hand with Believing God. They really should be taken pretty close together. Jennifer Rothschild’s Walking by Faith one—forgot the exact title. And really? I enjoyed Nicole Johnson’s Fresh Brewed Life. It was different and fun. I liked it a lot!

I haven’t taken Stepping Up, yet—but I think it is 6 or 7 weeks.

Hope this helps!

PHH:

My sister and I are doing No Other Gods this summer. This is a deep study, and it requires a lot of self-reflection, which is so hard but necessary for spiritual growth. We are really enjoying it and learning so much! God is really speaking to me about “functional gods” because I’m also doing Beth Moore’s Daniel for the second time this summer as well. Convicting!

Hi there,

I echo what the other say about the NOG study by Kelly Minter…it is really good…I am doing it solo but I think that it would foster great conversation and also the meal idea is really fun.

I did Stepping Up this past spring with a friend…I think it is a great fall or spring study as those are such busy times of the year that the 6-7 week format was nice and the homework isn’t overwhelming…it is a very subtle study…I was always surprise at what the Lord would reveal each week…really good.

For something different, Lisa Harper has a couple studies that come with a DVD that shows Lisa and her best buddies having Bible study and then pulling out a few discussion questions from the lesson…she has ones on Minor Prophets, one on Hebrews and one on the Song of Solomon…

I hope you find something that will really impact your group.

Cathy Davis:

I just struggled with what to lead (facilitate) this fall, as we only have 8 weeks. We’re doing a church wide study in October, so I didn’t have enough time to do a Beth Moore study :-( (I’m working on Stepping Up). I’m going to facilitate The Vision of His Glory by Anne Graham Lotz. I have watched part of the DVDs and I just love the way she talks! When she says “Jesus”, it’s like butter melting on a good biscuit.

I’m going to facilitate Conversation Peace during Sunday school time too. I really need something about my mouth :|.

I am doing the NOG study with one of my bffs and it has been truly amazing. However, another bff just started it with her life group and the participation has been lack-luster to say the least. IMHO, NOG can be so deep that just having one or two other people sharing might be the best set-up rather than a whole group… just a thought on that.

Conversation Peace is good. I’d recommend that one. I did it, like, 6 yrs ago I think….

Terry:

Four friends joined me this summer for a 6-week study by Laurie Cole titled BEAUTY BY THE BOOK, subtitle: Becoming a Biblically Beautiful Woman of God. We highly recommend it.

I first saw Laurie on Life Today as a guest of James and Betty Robison. I fell in love with her Texas accent and her message and out of curiosity, checked out her website. That is where I discovered the Bible study and felt led to take a chance on a study I knew nothing about by a woman I knew nothing about. May I just say…

Great things come from the great state of Texas, ya’ll! We were NOT disappointed! This was absolutely one of the most LIFE-CHANGING studies I have ever done. It ranks right up there with Beth’s Believing God and Henry Blackaby’s Experiencing God. As a former immoral woman, this was — IMHO — hands-down the best teaching I’ve ever heard on God’s design for me as a woman, a wife and a mother. Laurie reminded me so much of Beth as a teacher, as her message was convicting without being condemning. Like Beth, Laurie’s love for God’s Word is contagious. And this Bible study prompted some of the best discussions ever.

We all loved the workbook, too, BTW. All five of us completed ALL the homework each week, if that tells you anything!

Laurie’s ministry is Priority Ministries, in case you want to check out her website.

I just popped over here after reading my daily dose of “the Mama’s” (that would be Big Mama and Boo Mama) and saw this post.

I have never, ever, ever done a bible study.

(insert chirping crickets here)

I would love a “Bible study 101” for folks like myself who are discovering the world of bible study. Maybe you already have this—if so, please contact me, I’m interested!! : )
