Taking care
Sophie - July 15, 2008
One of my favorite parts of Deeper Still in Atlanta was when Beth, Kay and Priscilla answered questions that people have posted on the Deeper Still blog.
I could tell you that it's just because I am, by nature, a curious person.
But the fact of the matter is that I tend to err on the side of nosy.
Anyway, in one of the questions someone asked Kay and Beth what they do to take such great care of themselves now that they're grandmothers and all. Kay said that she thinks good nutrition is oh-so-critical, and Beth mentioned that she's never stopped exercising.
Beth went on to say that her number one beauty tip is to take care of your skin, and she said that she's really tried to encourage her daughters to do this as well.
Beth's advice made me smile, because my own mama has always encouraged me to stay out of the sun. And in those situations where I have to be in the sun for whatever reason, Mama has always told me to wear a big ole hat and plenty of sunscreen.
Just FYI: the "big ole hat" advice doesn't necessarily go over very well when you're 17. Mainly because the thought of wearing a big ole hat in public makes you NEVER WANT TO LEAVE THE HOUSE EVER AGAIN.
Anyway, there were a few dicey skincare days in my 20s when I tried to convince myself that I could tan if I just sat in the sun for long enough - never you mind that my skin is the color of paper - but for the most part I've heeded Mama's advice. Now that I'm closer to 40 than I am to 30, let's just say that I'm grateful.
So what about you? What's the best beauty advice you've ever received? And if you had to give one piece of beauty advice to someone younger than you are, what would it be?

One day my children will look at photos of themselves glowing with their pasty white skin next to the other tan children at the pool and thank me.
I just know it.

My mama always said, “Never leave the house without something on your face.” And in our house, “something” meant lipstick. Preferably in the red family. We have a permanent tan (Latinas), so we always look better when we have some color on our face.
And my sister and I always said that you can leave the house with your makeup done and not your hair, or with your hair done and not your makeup, but NEVER leave without your hair and makeup done.

Working for a plastic surgeon, I can tell you firsthand how important sunblock is. Not only will you LOOK much younger without sun damage, you’ll also be less likely to battle skin cancer, which can be devastating. I’d rather have pasty skin than a scar from surgical removal of a cancer. Moms out there: MAKE YOUR KIDS WHERE SUNBLOCK! They will thank you later. I’m very, very fair and have never been able to get in the sun without burning badly, so sun avoidance has been my mantra. Now that I’m 46 and have less sun damage than friends my age, I hear often that I don’t look my age.
Sophie, you’re right! Big ‘ole hat, lotsa sunblock and even sunblocking clothing are the best beauty tips there are! For some great SPF30+ sunblocking hats and clothes, check out http://www.sunprecautions.com/

Oh, I have to agree with Kay on this one. Eating right is the best beauty tip of all. It will keep your skin bright and clear and healthy, and that’s natural beauty, the way God created us to look.

My esthetician taught me to apply ice to pimples that are not yet “ripe”…you know the ones…the honkers that you can tell are going to be HUGE, but they are not yet ready to make their exit…so to speak.
Apply ice as many times a day as you think of or can and that bad boy will disappear! It really does work…try it on your next big one!!

SMILE! My mama always said I looked prettier with a smile! Even as a “I know everything and you don’t” Teenager! and it is true! and something everyone can do!

Taking care of your skin is the best advice in my opinion. I grew up in a coastal city in the OC, and no one ever told me the importance of skincare. At 31, those beach days with no sunscreen have sure caught up with me!
You will now find me pledging my allegiance to the giant hat and am passing that heritage to my girl!
Second best bit o advice. Laugh. A lot. Because laugh lines…well, they’re just beautiful.

1)Drinking those 8 or more glasses of water,
2)Clean your face and remove your make-up every night no matter how late or tired.
3)Moisturize every day (with SPF-all the better!) and night.
4) Don’t rub your eyes, no matter how much they itch or how wondeful it feels!
5) Try and have a good laugh daily, it’s aerobics for your inners!

Where are the questions that Beth and Kay answered?

Lotion, I get lots of compliments about my skin, and the ONLY thing I really do all the time is put on the lotion. I can’t handle that dry skin feeling.
