A birthday cake for Jesus

Sophie - December 21, 2008

Last week my little boy and I went to a Christmas party, and one of the moms at the party had a special treat for the kids: a birthday cake for Jesus.

Y'all, it was the sweetest thing.

What I especially loved was the way the mom used the cake to share the Gospel. She talked about how Jesus lived a sinless life - and that His purity covers all our sin just like the white icing covers the whole cake. She explained that the green icing piped around the bottom represents the eternal life we have through Him. She told the kids how the red candles symbolize the blood Jesus shed on the cross for us - a perfect atonement for our sin. As she lit the candles, she reminded the children that Jesus is the Light of the world, and when we know Him as our Savior and Lord, we're supposed to share the Light with other people.

Then the kids sang "Happy Birthday, Jesus." And I may have cried.

It was such a great way to remind the children of the Christmas story, and it's something that any family could do in the days leading up to Christmas - or even on Christmas Day.

Hope your week is a blessed one!

Oh I would have been crying. That is so sweet and what a neat neat way to share Jesus with friends!

Sniff, sniff. Me too.

What a great idea! I will have to print out this post and file it away for next year. It would be such a great idea for us to use at our annual Children’s Church Christmas party at our church!

Thanks so much for sharing this!

The first time I saw this was when my son was in preschool… at their little class Christmas party, his teacher did the same thing with the cake and the story and the candles and then all those precious little voices sang Happy Birthday to Jesus… I was bawling.

One family I know even have a birthday cake at their Christmas dinner and do the same thing.

So special.

I have done this since my oldest daughter was 1. She is now 14. We, like the family mentioned above, have Jesus’ Birthday Cake with our Christmas Dinner. For some reason, it is always Strawberry with Cream Cheese Icing……I’m pretending like Jesus was a fan of that combo….

Anyway, it is a precious time, all of our family members look forward to this tradition when they come over.

Gin:

How ironic that you posted this! This year I decided to do the same thing!
http://iseehope.blogspot.com/2008/12/christmas-is-when.html Although, I wasn’t as creative as with the green and red. But I will certainly rush back out to the store to do just that! Thanks for sharing! … and Merry Christmas!

We have a family friend who always did this. I decided this year to do the same and bought the cake and icing this weekend. Sadly, I didn’t think to use symbolic colors. What a great idea.

Charlotte:

We’ve been having a birthday cake for Jesus since my oldest, now 7, was 3 - I think she looks forward to the cake (almost) as much as opening her presents!

We always have a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas morning (actually it’s a german pancake roll). But this year, I do believe I will be adding to tradition with some green and red and The Story that changed the world!

Bless you, Sophie!

Pam:

We started this tradition when my grandchildren were small. I order the cake from a local grocery/bakery. It is wonderful how people stop me in the store when they see the cake in my cart and say things link ‘That’s a great idea” or “How did you get that idea/”

Wow, I just love that. On most years I get a birthday cake on Christmas Eve and as a family, we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus and sometimes exchange one small present in His honor but I love how she took it a wonderful step further. I so wish I head seen this earlier. Next year. Next year.

Thanks for sharing this. Melanie
