And their hair is an added bonus

Sophie - February 19, 2009

Y'all are going to think this is the most random thing ever.

And that is fine. Because this is in fact the most random thing ever.

This morning I was thinking about what music my little boy will remember from his childhood. He loves Monk & Neagle, Mercy Me, Dave Barnes - and while I don't know if it's at all normal for a five year-old to ask to listen to "Mr. Travis" on a nearly daily basis, there's no question that Travis Cottrell will forever be a part of Alex's Childhood Musical Hall of Fame.

Travis must be so proud. Maybe I should send him a certificate. With a commemorative seal.

Anyway, I've been walking down my own little musical memory lane for about the last two hours, and for some reason one song in particular popped in my head - a song I haven't listened to in, I don't know, fifteen years?

So I searched YouTube, and y'all - I FOUND IT.

I NEARLY SQUEALED.

I mean, that'll take you right back to some stirrup pants and Units. Yes ma'am it will.

So 'fess up, girls - what's your favorite old school contemporary Christian song from the 80s or 90s?

If you'll give me enough time to go hot roll my hair and lacquer it really good with some Paul Mitchell Freeze & Shine, I'll meet you in the comments.

Anna:

I wracking my brain and jiggling some memories loose.

My Father’s Eyes - Amy Grant

Pass It On - we sang it constantly

And our church had a band called “Truth” perform several times. They were very good - I owned all their ‘cassettes’.

Oh my! Here’s one of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIqdqB9fIw0

Speaking of big hair. Ahem.

Anything by David Meece or Amy Grant throws me back to my teenage days.

Oh this is not hard for me since I STILL LISTEN TO THIS MUSIC. :) Anything Amy Grant—especially “Doubly Good to You”. And Rich Mullins, who is still my very favorite.

Also, I may or may not have had a giant Michael W. Smith poster in my bedroom.

No joke, this song was on the very first Christian tape I ever bought. I’ve loved Sandi Patty ever since. I like to pretend like I can sing like her, which speaks to my gift for self-delusion.

Oh, that “Doubly Good to You”/Rich Mullins/Michael W. Smith poster child comment was me. I got so excited about my music that I forgot to leave my name. And clearly this is important enough to write back about.

Twila Paris - The Warrior Is A Child - I still love this song. And of course Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. Wasn’t all that synthesizer so cool!

“Feather in Your Cap” by The Allies Also “Island Song” by The Allies And “Na Na Na Na Na Na” by Mark Lowry :-)

Here’s the Link to “Island Song”… http://www.imeem.com/people/XJWju7/music/zE5-rb5m/alliesisland_song/

Degarmo & Key’s “Casual Christian” and “I’m Accepted” always make me think of Centrifuge at Panama City. Oh, the memories.

In the really early 80s, I loved Ken Medema’s “Moses”, so don’t you know I was overjoyed when I discovered it on one of Mr. Travis’ CDs. I’ve never heard Mr. Travis do it in person but I sure would love to.

Dori:

Oh, Sophie…

“Friends are friends forever if the Lord’s the Lord of them. And a friend will not say never tho’ the welcome will not end, Tho’ its hard to let you go in the Father’s hands we know That a lifetime’s not too long to live as friends… No a lifetime’s not too long to live….. ………..(dramatic pause)…….. as friends!”

Blessings, friend, Dori

My Father’s Eyes by Amy Grant is one of my all time FAVS!! She was my first CCA and I still have her music loaded on my i-pod. Gotta love that girl!

I have to go with Dori on this one. “Friends” was the first thing that popped into my head. Followed by Petra and DC Talk.

I remember going to this new thing at Disney World called Night of Joy. Petra was on the main stage and DC Talk was just some random side act. Hello 1992…

Oops… I just looked to see if the 2009 Night of Joy lineup was available yet, and it apparently started in 1983. So I guess it was just new to me in 1992 :0)

YES - Petra! YES. They did a concert for my youth group one time. We were ALL ABOUT some Petra.

And don’t even get me started about Amy. “The Collection” is high school in cassette tape form for me. LOVE HER.

Maybe you should just do a whole discussion on Amy Grant alone. No!—Just on her HAIR. I adored Amy Grant’s hair. Adored, envied, dreamed about that gorgeous hair.

Erin:

Mylon and Broken Heart. My very first concert. I was twelve and I went with my mom and dad. It was my birthday present.

They had some seriously rocking hair.

Shut up. They made a VIDEO for that song?! SWEET! I liked - He Works - DC Talk Go West Young Man - Steven Curtis Chapman Actually, anything by SCC And Michael W Smith, for that matter. Everywhere I Go - Amy Grant (went to the concert in 4th grade - holler.)

Oh, now I need to go visit iTunes and download some of these…..

Teresa Stout:

I love me some Sandi Patti and Dallas Holms.

Dori nailed it! We sang that one in choir all the time.

JoLynn:

You name it, I had and listened to it ALL the time!! I was going to be the “next” Sandi Patty. I owned everything she ever made and can sing every word to every song, STILL!!! Even stopped to see her at her house once in the 80’s!!!

Rich, Amy, Smitty, SCC, Petra, Leslie Phillips, John Thomas and Jason Oaks, Dallas Holmes, The Gaithers. Started singing Gaither music at church when I was 7 or 8. “I’m a Miracle”….. Now, it’s fun to watch my kids praise Jesus through music, it’s just very different. One of my boys knows every word to a song after he listens two times - I was the same way. My sweet kids like to praise Jesus while listening to: TobyMac, Third Day, Crowder and the list goes on!!!

We’re going to have to get together a group of 80’s Christian music junkies, not just Siestas!!!!

Nesha:

I still listen to that cassette tape (that’s right) of Sandy Patti in my car, just last week actually. Never saw the video though, thanks!
