First thing in the morning

Melanie - March 20, 2009

If there is anything that God has been consistently teaching me over the last year, it's the importance of spending some time with Him first thing in the morning. I've never been much of a morning person so it's always been a struggle for me to commit those first moments of the day to Him.

In "Esther" this week, Beth talks about how things can suddenly arise in our day that will require decisions or actions from us and "if we're not surrendered to God already that day with our hearts and minds guarded by Scripture, we'll more likely react by impulse than by the Holy Spirit."

Yes. I think I've been guilty of that a time or six hundred.

It just confirmed for me the importance of going to God first thing in the morning, giving Him that day, and asking Him to give me my daily bread.

"In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." Psalm 5:3

I am a morning person and I used to use that time in the early morning before the kids got up to blog. But for the last 4 or 5 months or so, I’ve been using it to pray and read the Bible.

Because of this, I have written less blog posts but I know that God appreciates the time I spend with Him and I know I need Him in my day more than I need a new blog post. I have actually started to look forward to this time with Him as much as I used to look forward to blogging!

Keri:

It was around this time last year that I made a commitment to make a morning quiet time a priority. Honestly, that sometimes means after kids are up and out and breakfast is cleared away, but it’s still morning.

A woman I admire greatly once told me that you get dressed in the morning. The exact time you should “get dressed” in the armor of God. That makes total sense to me. Besides, if I don’t daily ask God to order my footsteps, I tend to be all over the place and it is not pretty.

It’s amazing how what was once a chore is now something I very much look forward to and crave.

Dana:

I have made it a point to give at least my first 30 minutes (normally around 4:30 am CST) of the day to God. It just sets the day. I have also learned this is the during the “fourth watch” and the demonic spirits are at an all time low during this period and I seem to understand and hear God more clearly (you may be thinking I’m nutso but truthfully check out all the good things that happened during the fourth watch in the Bible-God confused the Egyptians so the Israelites could get away Ex 14:25; at daybreak the waters went back in their place and killed the Egyptians Ex 14:27; Jesus walked on water Matt 14:25). Just thought that was interesting and I would share with you!
