A piece of advice
Melanie - February 23, 2010
I'm in the middle of reading through the Bible in a year and was reading through the book of Proverbs this morning. That King Solomon knew what he was talking about.
Of course it helps that God asked him if there was any one thing he wanted and Solomon asked for wisdom. Which shows he was pretty wise in the first place because I'm not sure I would have had the wherewithal to ask for wisdom when I was a youth.
Or maybe even now.
But as I read through Proverbs, I started thinking about wisdom and wise words that people have shared with me over the years. The most recent advice that I took to heart was when someone I deeply admire and respect told me that she's realized in life that if you do anything in the hopes of making your name known instead of making God's name known, you're going to be deeply disappointed.
I'd love to know the best piece of advice you've ever received.

From my mom: “Don’t say ‘I can’t.’ Say ‘I’ll try.’”

“Never defend yourself if you are the only one you are defending.”
A wise man gave me this advice in regards to my wanting to defend my actions, words, opinions, etc. It has caused me to hold my tongue on more than one occassion and I was grateful. Jesus knows the truth. I don’t have to convince anyone else.

My first year teaching high school kids was rough, with both kids and adults. One of my previous teachers, whom I also student taught under, told me:
They can peel ya, honey, but they can’t eat ya.
Those words have spoken truth to me for over a decade.

“They can peel you but they can’t eat you”…from my mentor teacher after a particulary hard first year of teaching. Words I use often, to myself and to others.
That and my mom calling yesterday to advise to “Never vacuum up live coals from the fire in your vacuum cleaner bag”. Self-explanatory.

Oh… that one… what you said… love it, needed it.
And from many people through the years, and what I tend to share with others now:
God’s timing IS perfect!

It was from our pastor when my husband and I were in a terrible place in our marriage:”Sandy, pray for your heart to soften.”
