Savior King

Sophie - March 31, 2010 - Comments (0)

A couple of years ago we sang a new song called "Savior King" at my church. And y'all know how it is when the worship pastor breaks out a new song. It's a little unfamiliar at first as you stumble over the words and try to figure out the melody, and you might even sing more softly than normal. After all, you don't want to embarrass yourself by singing a phrase VERY loudly at the wrong moment, thereby startling the congregation with your unintended solo.

I may have done that once or twenty-four times in my adult life.

Anyway, when we sang the new song I mentioned earlier, I had a really unusual reaction: I loved it instantly. INSTANTLY. The rhythm was a little hard to predict and I didn't catch on to it immediately, but the lyrics absolutely captivated me. In fact, I came straight home and found the song on the web. And then I listened to it over and over. And over. And over and over.

Last night I was thinking about the heaviness, the gravity of these days leading up to Easter. And the chorus of "Savior King" came to mind. It's a powerful declaration in response to God's unmerited, lavish grace.

We love you Lord, we worship you
You are our God, you alone are good

You asked your Son to carry this
The heavy cross our weight of sin

I love you Lord, I worship you
Hope which was lost, now stands renewed
I give my life to honor this
The love of Christ, the Savior King

Amen.

About five months ago I posted a list of LifeWay Women folks who use Twitter, and a couple of y'all left comments that said something along the lines of "HELLO, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE TWITTER, THANK YOU."

And do you know what? I totally understood where y'all were coming from. Because there was a point in time when I didn't really get Twitter, either.

But now? I think it's a delightful little addition to my web routine. It's a great way to share funny things that happen to you throughout the day (things that might not merit a whole blog post), and it's also a great way to share an incredible deal or an interesting news story that you find online.

More than anything, though, Twitter gives all of us the opportunity to make connections with a wide range of people. If you have a question or comment for someone but don't have his or her email address, Twitter is a great way to try to make contact. All you have to do is to make sure you put the @ sign in front of his or her username (ex. @paigegreene Loved the You & Your Girl event in Olive Branch!).

I wasn't in Olive Branch or Tucson this past weekend for Y&YG or Living Proof Live, but Twitter helped bridge the distance. The updates and pictures from the LifeWay teams in each place provided a fun way to keep in touch with sweet friends.

And if you decide to jump on board the Twitter train, I think you'll feel the same way.

So once again, here's our (semi-exhaustive) Twitter list.

Women Mentoring Girls

*Post by Chris Adams

"Will you disciple me?"
"Will you mentor me?"
"Can we meet and maybe you can show me how to read my Bible like you do?"
"Can you teach me how to hear from God?"

If you've been in ministry very long, you've probably heard these questions--or a variation of them. The concept of mentoring or discipling is not a new one. In fact, it's been around since biblical times (check out Titus 2!). Scripture sets forth our mandate for discipling others.

But here's the big question: what does discipleship look like in girls' ministry? How do you differentiate (or do you?) between discipleship and mentoring? Or even counseling? The terms are thrown around, but with such different concepts in mind, we need to get on the same page, with the same direction and the same vision.

So let's talk about it--on Tuesday, March 23rd at noon, through a web cast.

Amy Pierson, girls' minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, will be joining us soon to discuss this topic. She a disciple and a discipler. She's passionate about girls' ministry but even more passionate about helping girls and young adult women discover and apply God's Word for ourselves. She is also the author of the new girls' ministry book Table for Two: Doing Life and Savoring Scripture Together.
