The Middle C

Melanie - September 1, 2010

So I was going to wait until I really had my thoughts together before I gave you a brief summary of Beth's message from LPL Richmond last weekend. But then I realized I'll probably never get my thoughts together and then a month later you might be all "Whatever happened to that summary you promised?" or you might be as scattered as me and forget all about it. Even so, better a summary that may ramble than no summary at all.

Just pretend like that's true.

Beth taught out of John 1. She began her message by having the women in the coliseum raise their hand if they'd been raised in church. The majority of hands went up. And then she had them raise their hands if they currently served in some way at the church. Again, the majority of hands went up. She challenged us to look beyond what has become so familiar to so many of us and return to the wonder of Christ.

The wonder of Christ.

I'll go ahead and confess right now that it was the third time in a week I'd heard that I needed to return to the wonder of who Christ is and what He did for me. I'm assuming it's because it hasn't been lost on God that I'd lost my sense of wonder and become very complacent. He's smart like that.

Beth shared that many commentaries refer to John1 as an octave. And if it's an octave, then Jesus is the Middle C. In fact, He is the middle C of our lives and we all have to return to the middle C, if we want to hit high C.

In the first chapter of John, Jesus is referred to by eight names just like there are eight keys in an octave.

The Word
The Life
The Light
The Only Begotten Son
The Lamb
The Messiah
The King
The Son of Man

When we become too familiar and complacent about who Christ is, then we can get flat or sharp. We have to remember to return to middle C. It's about Jesus. It's about His wonder.

I'll share a little bit more tomorrow.

Maybe I'll have all my thoughts together by then.

But probably not.

Sounds like it was an absolutely wonderful message and I wish I could have been there to hear it. I need it too. But, your recap is enough to really get me thinking about it. Looking forward to the rest of what you’ll share!

I actually really like this short and sweet reminder. I was there this weekend and I’m doing to send this to my ladies that were with me. We had the amazing opportunity to serve as volunteers and it blessed us so much to do so.

I like this short and sweet reminder because its exactly that short and to the point!

I have a question. Beth had us repeat something to each other at the end of the message and say it to each other. I’ve seen others on the LPM blog ask for it is there a way to get a hold of that? Thanks.

I’m loving your blog by the way. I’m new to it. I’m really enjoying it!!

Ammy Doeden:

Hello, I was there for this wonderful message and I have to say that it was exactly what I needed to hear from God. I have let my life become so busy that I have forgotten to look for the little things that God places in my life to remind me of His wonder. My husband left for Afghanistan this past Friday so this trip to see Beth with the ladies from my church was the last “alone” time that I am going to have for a while. It really helped me put things back into perspective and proper order. I have been spending more time alone with God in the quiet hours of the morning and it has been so amazing. It starts my day off on the middle C that I have been missing for way too long. Thank you so much for this wonderful weekend! God is good!
