More on Missional Small Community Training

Tuesday August 25, 2009   ~   0 Comments

oneday.png

Yesterday, I posted the video from my training in Oklahoma. I neglected to add the outline and notes, so I am posting them here. You can see the video here and the notes are below.

At the One Day web page, you can find those outlines, with "blanks" if you want to use them as training notes. Bob Mayfield tells me that 16 of the 273 churches have done their "One Day," but they have already trained over 2000 leaders. I am encouraged!

Missional Leadership

1) Reconsideration of Leadership

a) From superman to everyone
b) From church to kingdom
c) From me to we
d) From personal power to people empowerment

2) Rejection of Clergification

a) From three tiers to one mission
b) From "called to the ministry" to "called to ministry"
c) From "called to missions" to "sent on mission"
d) From exceptional to ordinary
e) From "priests" to a "priesthood of believers" codependence

3) Renewed focus on mission

a) From "full service" to "simple mission"
b) From "pay, pray, and get out of the way" to "join God on His mission"
c) From decisionism to disciple making
d) From "mission statement" to "Jesus mission"
Luke 4
Luke 19:10

4) Realignment of priorities

a) God is a missionary god
b) I personally join Him on mission - modeling
c) I lead others to join Him on mission - leadership
d) I equip others - multiplication

I hope that is helpful. Be sure to watch the video to get the context.

Saturday is for Seminars

Saturday June 6, 2009   ~   5 Comments

It has been three weeks since I have been in the office. We (parts of my family and I) have been in 6 states and 5 countries since last sitting in my office chair. (My travel details are here). As weird as it sounds, I miss my office chair (and, of course, my co-workers).

Here is a recap of this week:

Southeastern

As I post this, I just got home from a week in Raleigh-Durham. I had a great time teaching at Southeastern Seminary and, if I have not mentioned it, you should be going to school there (and check out the Ph.D. program in missiology with a focus on North America that I have been helping develop). It was a great week and I look forward to much more interaction at SEBTS.

Advance09

panel.jpgAt the end of the week, I had the privileged to speak at Advance09. Here is a panel we did including Tyler Jones, Eric Mason, John Piper, Mark Driscoll, and J.D. Greear. I preached from Matthew 16 on how the Kingdom births the church in its wake.

3601701790_4db0779d07venue.jpgThe venue was pretty impressive. The attendees were enthusiastic. The music was amazing (good to hear the Sojourn Church band again).

I was blessed to hear preaching from several amazing leaders, most of whom I also know as good friends.

Thanks to the folks at Desiring God, you can find all the audio from the conference here.

Next Up

I am home this week and will be in the office five (count 'em, five) days in a row.

We hit the road just a bit next weekend.

I will be preaching Sunday in San Antonio at Grace Point Church. They have three services (which I did not remember when I agreed to do so about a year ago!). I am taking Jaclyn with me and we are planning to Remember the Alamo.

From San Antonio, I will be flying to Anaheim, CA to speak at the Southwest Baptist Conference, a regional gathering of Converge Worldwide (formerly the Baptist General Conference).

And, then, of course since I am in Anaheim, CA and have Jaclyn with me, we have plans on Tuesday:

Saturday is for Seminars

Friday May 22, 2009   ~   0 Comments

I'm out of the country at the moment, but I'll be back soon enough - just in time to travel some more. At least this time it's closer to home and my whole family will be with me.

Here are some events coming up:

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary D. Min. Seminar

In early June (1st - 5th) I'll be a guest professor at SEBTS teaching a doctoral seminar titled, "Practical and Strategic Issues in Missions, Evangelism, and Church Growth." I love my time teaching at seminaries and Southeastern is an amazing school.

Advance09

Be sure to not miss Advance09 that same week. Piper, Driscoll, Chandler, Akin, Greear, and many friends... you won't want to miss it.

Here is something for the Fall:

A Note from Bob Whitesel to GCRNet (ASCG) Leaders

My friend Bob Whitesel sent this out about a future conference and I am passing it on to you. Be sure to click on the link to see the program. Some great speakers there.

As you know, we have an exciting Annual Conference for The Great Commission Research Network coming up Nov. 11-12, 2009 in New Orleans, hosted by New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Hope to see you in New Orleans this fall.

At Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Monday November 17, 2008   ~   0 Comments

Sitting in the faculty lounge at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and getting ready for my class.

I am glad to be part of the team, but I need to give them an updated picture.

I will be teaching "Becoming a Missional Church" (class syllabus is here) On Thursday, I will be spending the morning with uberbloggers Bill Kinnon and David Fitch (and David also moonlights as a professor and a church planter). We will be shooting video and I will share more details on that later.

Thursday I will lead a conference at Trinity from 3:15-6:45pm. I must admit to being confused about it so when I get more info, I will post it here.

Thinking about Ministry in Orlando

Thursday July 17, 2008   ~   15 Comments

Whenever I come to Orlando, I end up thinking about life and ministry.

Today was a day like that. After I finished teaching class, my daughter and I did a little tour and I shared with her part of her dad's (and her mom's) journey. She seemed interested, but it might have been the promise of ice cream along the way.

I was born and reared in New York and list that as "home" on forms that ask. However, Orlando has a lot of memories for me. I lived here as a teenager and had some significant milestones during those years:

1. I came to Christ in Orlando.
2. I was discipled here (in a new church plant as a teenager).
3. I met my wife in High School. We were high school sweethearts and even went to the prom together.
4. My sister died here (in 1987).
5. I grew greatly in my faith through, and in some cases because of, those things.

So, today I went by my old house (which was just torn down), the restaurant where I had my first date with Donna, my sister's memorial garden, and some other meaningful places with my daughter.

Being in Orlando makes me wish it was a simpler time when I did not have to worry about books and research, the challenges of denominational structures, who has this-or-that agenda, what event I was speaking at next, or what I had to say (or not say) at the next place.

I miss those days when things were simpler and it seemed that the big concerns were loving God, growing in faith, and helping others do the same. I am sure it was not as simple as I remember, but coming to Orlando makes me wish it was.

Being here makes me want to go back in time, grab a guitar (yes, I play, though not well), and go start a church with nothing but God, a Bible, and a mission...

So, pardon my musings. It was just a good day. It reminded me of what really matters... and it prompts me to adjust some things in my own life today and over the next few months.

Joining the Faculty of Southeastern Seminary

Wednesday May 7, 2008   ~   15 Comments

201logo.gifDanny Akin sent out an email yesterday to the faculty and students at Southeastern indicating I was joining their faculty. So, I thought I better make that official (or as official as a blog can make anything)!

I am joining the faculty of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary as Visiting Research Professor of Missiology.

Traveling...

Friday April 4, 2008   ~   2 Comments

Today, I lectured at NOBTS and their partnered colleges.

It was a nice mix of students and faculty. I presented on the emerging church and then three faculty members critiqued my presentation. Much more on that later...

Right now I am at a St. Louis hotel.

Tomorrow, I am speaking to the leadership of "General Association of General Baptists." Some of you may not know that there are a whole bunch of Baptist denominations.

Wikipedia describes this group as:

General Association of General Baptists - a group of Baptists holding the general atonement (that Christ died for all persons), located mostly in the Midwestern United States.

This body has grown and developed until it now embraces about 60 associations, 816 churches and more than 73,000 members. The denominational headquarters are located in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where they operate Stinson Press. The official denominational publication is The General Baptist Messenger.

The General Association oversees publication of Sunday School literature, a home mission board, a foreign mission board, and the Oakland City University in Oakland City, Indiana. The General Association is a member of the National Association of Evangelicals and the Baptist World Alliance.

Joel Hunter, Reformed Seminary, and the Distributed Church

Monday March 24, 2008   ~   0 Comments

Although I have recently shared that I have joined the faculty at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, I am still pleased to be teaching a few places in the next year or so, including Reformed, Biblical, and Southeastern seminaries.

_44022796_hunter_203.jpgIt was recently announced that I will be co-teaching my class at Reformed with Joel Hunter.

Joel is quite a legend and has riled up much of the evangelical world. He was offered the leadership of the Christian Coalition, announced his plan to broaden the agenda of the organization, and then the Coalition and he parted ways while he was still "president elect." The New York Times version is here.

CNN explained:

"I wanted to expand the issues from only moral ones -- such as opposing abortion and redefining marriage -- to include compassion issues such as poverty, justice, and creation care," Hunter said in a statement. "We need to care as much for the vulnerable outside the womb as inside the womb."

He has a book out that gets at some of his political views, A New Kind of Conservative.

However, conservative politics (of the new or old kinds) will not be the focus of our class. We will focus on the gospel, the mission, and the church. Since Joel has been all over the news, many people might not know that he is a pastor in Central Florida with a thriving church called Northland.

And, the book he is requiring for the class is Church Distributed, his manifesto of sorts. You can read the book online here. In it, he explains:

So what is the distributed church, anyway?...

In the present model of the church, the local church tends to be isolated and preoccupied with its own world. It appears to be, and often is, self-centered. Our triune God, by His very nature, models relationship-centeredness. God in Christ came out of His self-sufficiency to identify with those radically different from Himself, and His church is called to be like Him. The church that is distributed values ministry beyond its walls more than ministry inside them because it focuses on those not yet included. It reaches through relationships it has within its congregation to identify with others. Intentional distribution of the church with a goal of ultimate connection through relationship reflects God's image.

Christian, wake up: YOU ARE A MINISTER OF THE CHURCH. You don't need to know more; you don't need to have a church program commission you--although both can be useful. But you need to understand that in this definition of the church that you are a minister of the church and you can further ministry by connecting with other believers who are different from yourself.

It should be a great class. You can download the syllabus here.

In Ohio at Cedarville University

Monday February 25, 2008   ~   5 Comments

Cedarville_University_logo.gifToday I am at Cedarville Univerity in Ohio teaching one session this afternoon and delivering a message tonight. So, it may be a day or so until I catch up on the blog.

They describe the conference theme as, "Breaking Down the Walls: Evangelism that Renovates a Community." I really like that title. Other than me, it is a good group of speakers:

Featured speakers in 2008 include Ed Stetzer, Emir Caner, Eric Geiger, Forrest Pollock, Chuck Kelley, Scott Dawson, Willie Jacobs, Ralph West. Cedarville University's HeartSong touring team will serve as conference worship leader. This Hope and Cedarville University ensembles will provide special music for the conference.

More soon...

Joining the Faculty of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Wednesday January 30, 2008   ~   3 Comments

TIU-logo.jpgRecently, I shared some of the places I will be teaching. I am honored to teach at these different schools and enjoy the time to do so. However, I need to focus my teaching so that I can have more interaction with faculty colleagues, ongoing contact with students, and a more focused teaching schedule.

The folks at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School approached me a while back to talk about joining their faculty. The timing was not right as I was heading to LifeWay. However, since I have moved to LifeWay, we have talked again about how we might work together.

So, after recent faculty interviews and discussion with our LifeWay leadership, it was announced yesterday that I will be joining the faculty as Affiliate Professor of Research and Missional Ministry at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (and I have to learn to call it "TEDS" now that I am part of the team there).

I will not be leaving LifeWay, but this will help us at LifeWay Research by having access to students who are engaging in research and also help us connect to evangelicals in need of our research services. .www111_1.jpg

There are few schools who have assembled the scholars that the have at Trinity. I am currently in the process of co-editing a book with David Hesselgrave, Professor Emeritus of Missions that includes a chapter from Paul Hiebert, the recently deceased missions professor at Trinity. These men are some of the leading scholars in the world... and Trinity has a whole new generation of scholars as well.

Trinity has asked me specifically to help bring a "missional? emphasis and I look forward to doing so.

I look forward to working with my new friends at Trinity-- world class scholars with a passion for global evangelization.

Thanks for Craig Ott and Tite Tienou for the invitation and their partnership.

Out and About

Tuesday January 29, 2008   ~   8 Comments

This morning I left Orlando and it was in the 80s. Right now, I am in Chicago and it is 5 degrees. Ugh.

From the weather service:

At 1035 PM CST...radar indicated an area of snow across the Chicago Metro area extending into much of Northwest Indiana... travel conditions will be extremely hazardous. inmreIL_.gifBlowing snow will continue to reduce visibilities to a quarter mile or less in open locations...with localized visibilities approaching zero... west winds gusting to 40 to 50 can be expected. The combination of the cold temperatures and very strong winds will produce wind chills of 20 below to 30 below zero overnight. If you must travel...allow plenty of extra time to reach your destination and exercise extreme caution.

Here's a quick recap of the week so far:

We had a good day yesterday in Orlando with the folks at Global Church Advancement. I taught on missional church planting. It was always good to get dinner with friends Steve Childers and Bart Johnson.

Early this morning, I jumped on a plane from Orlando to Chicago (where I am right now).

This is Church Planting Week at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. It also included an Acts 29 bootcamp. So, I did two sessions this afternoon. Then, we went to dinner with the Evangelical Free leadership and Trinity Faculty up at the seminary "mansion." It was a great time of dialogue about how a seminary can train church planters.

Then, Mark Driscoll, A.J. Hamilton, Scott Thomas drove off and went out for Buffalo wings. It was good to catch up with them and some other old friends... although Mark almost killed us driving back through the snow.

Tomorrow morning I catch a flight to Lynchburg to speak at Liberty University and meet with Jonathan Falwell, Ergun Caner, and Dave Early to talk about their aggressive new church planting plans.

More tomorrow about future teaching plans.

Teaching and Learning

Tuesday January 22, 2008   ~   4 Comments

As I mentioned last week, I was teaching at Biola University at their Talbot Seminary.

I always enjoy teaching and they give me some freedom to do so at LifeWay.

Last week's course was was:

D.Min., "Church Planting and Revitalization? at the Talbot School of Theology, Biola University.

The course is part of the second year residency that is described as follows:

The purpose of the second year residency is to introduce strategies for turning around declining churches and for restoring health and growth to established churches.
An emphasis on church planting and multiplication as the primary means of effective evangelism is also explored. Strategies and practices of church planters, such as how to use demographics, select and train church planters, and daughter church planting will be studied.

Biola has put together a nice church planting track and you can find more info about that here.

If you have any interest in taking a class together, here are a few upcoming classes I am teaching:

D.Min., "Church Growth and Renewal? at Reformed Theological Seminary

July 14-18, 2008, I am at Reformed Seminary (as I have the last two summers). They have asked me to teach, "Church Growth and Renewal? a required course in their Doctor of Ministry Core (DMC 804). The description reads:

An exploration of church growth and renewal dynamics from a biblical, theological and cultural perspective. Topics include corporate prayer, worship, preaching, teaching, small groups, evangelism and ministries of mercy & justice. Special attention will be given to developing missional churches that engage today's culture with transformational gospel ministries.

Mark Dever and I taught the class last year and you can find the syllabus here.

D.Min., "Church Planting? at Liberty Seminary

During the week of August 11-15, I will lecture in Dave Earley's class at Liberty. I am not the professor, but I am just lecturing. But, since Rod listed me on his newsletter (see here), I thought I would return the favor.

I will be there speaking at the Innovate Conference, which is Jonathon Falwell's remake of the former SuperConference.

D.Min., "Missional Church? at Biblical Seminary

Then, Feb. 9-13, 2009, I am at Biblical Seminary in Hatfield, PA. Here is the course description for DM901 "Entering the Missional Conversation?:

The impulse for a missional approach to theology, church, and life arises from the notion of mission as a central aspect of the character of God. The actions of the triune God are reflective of this missional character and explain the primacy of mission that is at the heart of the biblical narratives concerning the work of God in human history. This missional perspective involves continual intellectual and imaginative reflection on the interaction between the Gospel and culture and the creative outworking of this activity in socially embodied form of communal life. This course will introduce the ongoing conversation concerning the primacy of mission for Christian thought and practice and provide an orientation for further advanced reflection in missional theology and leadership.

John Franke is teaching the class this year and I will be teaching it next. I will probably edit the syllabus a bit since John and I are so different and I don't use phrases like, "socially embodied form of communal life.? Grin.

D.Min, "Missional Church? at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

March 9-13, 2009, I will be teaching at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Il. We have not yet nailed down the title of the course, but they did want me to lock in the dates. So, we did.

It will be a missional church focused course, I am guessing very similar to the course I am teaching at Biblical Seminary.

We are also discussing an M.Div. level course for the fall of 2008, but that is not certain yet.

D.Min., "Missions, Evangelism, and Church Growth? at Southeastern Seminary

Finally, June 1-4, 2009, I will be teaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. I will be teaching one of their four core courses for their newly redesigned D.Min. program.

Southeastern is working hard (and succeeding) at becoming "the? missions school. There are some exciting forthcoming programs in the school.

For the future:

I like the diversity of locations, but I am teaching at too many places. (In 2007, I taught at Midwestern Baptist, New Orleans Baptist, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Indiana Wesleyan, and Reformed.)

I do teaching like this because I find it more personally enriching than conference speaking. For example, yesterday I spoke to several hundred pastors in Alexandria, LA. I had a great time, but honestly was only able to connect personally with a handful over break times. Teaching is a better opportunity to build community.

But, that community is best done by focusing and not being everywhere. So, in the coming weeks, I will be focusing my teaching... more soon.
